Resource Revolution 2013 Sponsored by The winners 6/12 LANDFILL DIVERSION STRATEGY - Carpet Recycling UK Last year, Carpet Recycling UK and its members assisted the carpet industry in diverting a total of 85,000 tonnes of waste carpet from landfill, a 30% rise on 2011. This waste was either reused, recycled or sent for energy recovery. UK-based manufacturing members also diverted record levels of carpet production offcuts – more than 6,000 tonnes – from landfill. This represented a diversion rate of 99% in 2012. Its success has had major impacts across the supply chain and wider business/community sectors. Axion Recycling's Keith Freegard (left) accepts Carpet What the judges said: Carpet Recycling UK was praised for bringing businesses together to make the step change needed for greater reuse and recovery of this challenging material stream. Their entry made it obvious that they were tackling a tough issue headon while delivering significant benefits on the ground. Recycling UK's award from Mike Webster from LCRN What the winner said: "What we've done is used the skills we've developed to bring together all of the members in one industry – the manufacturers, the retailers, the installers and the waste management companies – and get them to think together about how the resource they've got, which they previously viewed as waste, can be turned into something that can be recycled and we're working really hard to get that tonnage up to a much higher level." Laurance Bird, director, Carpet Recycling UK Special mention: The judges also felt two other entries in this category deserved special mention for their commendable, community-led approach to landfill diversion. • Élan Hair Design • High Down Prison Shortlisted companies: • Carpet Recycling UK • Edinburgh Airport and SWR • Élan Hair Design • High Down Prison • London Waste • Taylor Wimpey and RSK
