More information: www.utilityweeklive.co.uk Reader of the week Matthew Aylott, policy engagement manager, UK Energy Research Centre "I would love to become the next President of China. China very much holds the keys to our energy future" What was your first job? My career started as a PhD researcher looking at the future of biomass in the UK energy mix. Some might not classify a PhD as a 'real' job but these days academia is less about educational training and more like a business. What are the best and worst parts of your job? It is enormously rewarding to take what is usually very interesting but very rigorous academic research, and trans- late it into something that poli- cymakers can and frequently do use. I'd say that there were no parts of the job I disliked, but if you've ever seen me queueing to get through security at the Houses of Parliament you will know otherwise. What's your dream job and why? I would love to become the next President of China. China very much holds the keys to our energy future. What's your most treasured possession? A first pressing of the Beatles album Rubber Soul on vinyl. Unlike our energy policy, it is near faultless in its design, con- struction and delivery. What album is currently in your car CD player? Sia's Some People Have Real Problems. She is an exceptional talent who prefers to let her music do the talking. What quote or saying do you most overuse? The cheapest and greenest unit of energy is the one you don't use. If you ruled the world, what would you do first? I would ensure every new house built was zero carbon. Above all else we need to reduce energy consumption. In the UK we have among the cheapest energy per unit in Europe but energy bills are high because our housing stock is so thermally inefficient.
