Two massive transformers designed to
increase the capacity of Penwortham
substation have been delivered to
National Grid – by road, sea and river.
The two 270-tonne transformers,
called a quad booster, were built in
Stafford. They were moved by road to
Ellesmere Port docks in Cheshire and
then brought by sea and along the
River Ribble by barge to a specially
built landing stage in the park off
Holme Road, Preston.
They were then transported using a
girder frame trailer more than 73m in
