IDA The academy is designed to bring specialized training in desalination and a higher school of specialized study in the field offering courses in Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced module format that complements the participant's level of knowledge. The WC2013 academy courses focus on advanced thermal and membrane technologies and specialized topics that will provide a comprehensive understanding of desalination processes and practices. The courses are suitable for: plant operation managers; contractors, consultants and incumbent desalination workforce; water utility managers; and institutional/university professors and students. For curriculum, technical questions and general information, email: Academy@idadesal.org. IDA invites Channabasappa scholarship applications Applications have been invited by the International Desalination Association (IDA) for its Channabasappa Memorial Scholarship, which seeks to encourage engineers and scientists to further their education in subjects related to desalination and water reuse. The scholarship provides financial assistance to graduate students who have been accepted into a graduate program of doctoral studies and who intend to pursue a desalination and water reuse related research thesis. The total maximum grant per student is US$ 10,000 per calendar year. The individual selected for scholarship must have other sources of funds to supplement this grant that will allow the student to complete graduate degree requirements. Applicants must have graduated from an accredited university and must be from the top 10% of their class in science or engineering. The applicant must prove admission to a graduate program of doctoral studies in desalination or water re-use and must exhibit leadership and achievement potential. Applicants must be IDA members. The deadline for submitting application documents is 1 June 2013. For information, contact Leslie Merrill at lmerrill@idadesal. org. AmerICAn membrAne TeChnology AssoCIATIon Des moines chosen for tech transfer workshop The American Membrane Technology Association is to hold a Technology Transfer Workshop in Des Moines, Iowa. The workshop on 15-17 July 2013 is titled Membranes Across The Midwest and will focus on the basics of membranes, including low, medium, and high pressure membrane systems, microfiltration/ ultrafiltration (UF) design considerations, regional applications, and reverse osmosis (RO) troubleshooting. Supported by the International Desalination Association and the American Water Works Association, it will feature a facility visit to the Saylorville Water Treatment Plant (WTP), which features both UF and RO, and an evening riverboat cruise. Papers will be presented on the Central Iowa Water Association's RO Plant, Keokuk Municipal Waterworks WTP, Sioux City's Southbridge Regional Water Treatment Plant and Emmons County WTP. Other contributions will come from H2O Innovation, Avista Technologies, CDM Smith, Harn R/O Systems, GE, MWH, Black & Veatch and Carollo Engineers. The workshop brochure can be downloaded from http://www.amtaorg.com/wp-content/uploads/AMTA_ DesMoines_TechTransfer.pdf . CArIbbeAn DesAlInATIon AssoCIATIon Two workshops listed for June The Caribbean Desalination Association is holding two workshops in June 2013 on the islands of St Maarten and Curaçao. The St Maarten event is a Water Reuse Workshop, which will introduce membrane bioreactors, hollow fiber and plate; sequencing batch reactors; and aeration – all supported with casestudies. The venue will be the Westin St Maarten Dawn Beach Resort & Spa. The subject of the Curaçao workshop is Non-Revenue Water & Plant Retrofit on 26-29 June 2013. The association has also set the date for its 2014 Biennial Conference & Exposition as 24-28 June 2014. No location details have been posted. europeAn DesAlInATIon soCIeTy eDs calls for 2014 Cyprus conference papers The European Desalination Society has issued a call for papers and opened exhibition booking for its conference on Desalination for the Environment, Clean Water & Energy to be held in Limassol, Cyprus, on 11-15 May 2014. The conference will overview the most recent developments in desalination technology, its cost and extent of application, including socio-economic and environmental issues. It will bring together research scientists, decision makers, managers, design engineers and operators from water companies, industries, government departments, consulting firms, research institutes and universities. The place of industry, research and government decisionmaking in this booming market will be addressed. Why and how desalination should be integrated into the national or regional water management plans, ensuring socioeconomic and environmental benefits, will be the focal point of the conference. Visits will be available to the Limassol and Dhekelia desalination plants and the Kourion archaeological site. The deadline for abstracts is 31 October 2013. Abstracts should be submitted online via www.desline.com. A brochure in pdf format can also be downloaded from www.desline.com/Cyprus2014flyer.pdf. Bookings for the accompanying trade exhibition, which will be open during 12-14 May 2013, should be made via ACE Event Management at tnolan-shaw@btconnect.com; tel +44 1902 428766. membrAne InDusTry AssoCIATIon of ChInA mIAC to have own Congress pavilion The Membrane Industry Association of China (MIAC), which recently became an IDA affiliate, will have its own exclusive pavilion in the exhibition hall at the IDA World Congress in Tianjin. This pavilion will allow MIAC's Chinese-origin associates to showcase their organizations. MIAC is committed to the development and promotion of the appropriate use of desalination and desalination technology in water supply, water reuse, water pollution control, water purification, water treatment and other water sciences and technology.
