IDA & AFFILIATES IDA PublIshes new worlD Congress InFormATIon The International Desalination Association (IDA) has issued the Second Announcement for its World Congress 2013 on Desalination & Water Reuse, which will take place in Tianjin, China, during 20-25 October 2013. The announcement, in .pdf format, can be downloaded from the IDA website. The file contains details of the venue (the Meijiang Convention and Exhibition Center) and how to register; a list of four- and five-star hotels; the exhibition (which still has space available) with a list of current exhibitors; post-congress facility tours to the Tianjin SDIC Desalination Plant and the TianjinSingapore Eco-city; a list of technical papers; travel details; and many other useful pieces of information. The theme of the IDA Congress, Desalination: A Promise for the Future, emphasizes the vital role that desalination and water reuse play in helping the planet meet its water needs as it faces increased challenges from urbanization, climate change and economic uncertainties. The congress aims to examine these challenges and offer potential solutions by providing a platform for water and desalination experts from around the world to exchange knowledge, network and share their expertise and experiences. This year's event will focus on such topics as: current and emerging desalination technologies; environmental sustainability; plant operations and management; and finance. Theoretical knowledge is balanced by a keen understanding of applied technologies and best practices from the field. In his invitation in the brochure, IDA president Corrado Sommariva, describes China as " a growing market for desalination and water reuse." "As this Second Announcement goes to press," he writes, "we have learned that China's National Development & Reform Commission has announced the initial list of regions and companies selected to carry out seawater desalination pilots, directing the listed regions and companies to actively promote the application of desalinated water and encourage its use in daily supplies." "This is an exciting development towards the fulfilment of China's 12th Five-Year Plan for desalination, and it makes the timing and location of our World Congress even more relevant," states the president. Early (discounted) registration for the congress, which can save participants up to US$ 400, is available online at www.idadesal.org. Early registration will end on 16 August 2013. Tianjin's history of desalination In his own invitation, Haishan Zhao, the directorgeneral of the Tianjin Municipal Science & Technology Commission, points out the city's leading role in the development of desalination. "As early as the 1980s, the first industrial facility for desalination in China was constructed in Tianjin," he says, "and today, the daily desalinated water in Tianjin already accounts for one third of the national total. In addition, the largest desalination plant in Asia has been built here. In the future, Tianjin will become a model city for desalination in China." "The opening of Tianjin Binhai New Area is part of the overall national development strategy of China. Industrial clusters and big projects are located in Binhai NewArea, which results in a higher demand on Tianjin water resources, especially desalinated water," Zhao continues. "Tianjin has huge room for the development of desalination and provides remarkable commercial opportunities to the world, especially in the field of seawater desalination." the largest desalination plant in China. It is coupled to a 4 x 1,000 MW ultra-critical coal-fired power station from which it uses waste heat. The water produced by the desalination plant is used as boiler make-up water, industrial process water and potable drinking water supplied to the city. The brine from the seawater desalination plant is transferred to a salt field to produce salt. Commissioning of the remaining half of the 8 x 25,000 m3/d additional multi-effect distillation units is in progress by contractor IDE Technologies. Post-congress Facility Tours Tours will be available on Friday, 25 October 2013 to the Tianjin SDIC Desalination Plant and the TianjinSingapore Eco-city. Tianjin SDIC Desalination Plant The 200,000 m3/d Tianjin SDIC Desalination Plant is | 44 | Desalination & Water Reuse | May-June 2013 Tianjin-Singapore Eco-city The Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city is the result of a collaborative agreement between the governments of China and Singapore to jointly develop a socially harmonious, environmentally friendly and resourceconserving city in China. The Eco-city will be developed to become a platform for innovation and the integrated application of technologies in the area of water treatment and circular economy, through which related industrial clusters will be formed. Academy courses follow China congress The International Desalination Association (IDA) has announced that the IDA Desalination Academy is to conduct three courses on 25 October 2013 during its World Congress 2013 in Tianjin.
