projects The desalination/power complex at Shuweihat S2 Shuweihat S2 MSF plant celebrates year of successful operation Myeongjae Kwon, general manager/water warranty team leader, Doosan Heavy Industries, Republic of Korea Editor's note: At the end of 2012, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction succeeded in winning the contract for the Yanbu 3 multi-effect distillation seawater desalination plant in Saudi Arabia (see Contracts & Tenders, page 10). At the same time, the company was also celebrating a year's successful operation of the Shuweihat S2 multi-stage flash desalination plant in Abu Dhabi, UAE. This article looks at the construction and operation of the plant. THE SHUWEIHAT S2 plant, an independent power generation and seawater desalination project, was constructed at a greenfield site in the Al Ruwais region about 250 km west of Abu Dhabi, UAE, by a consortium of Siemens AG, Samsung C&T Corporation (power portion), and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (desalination portion) under a contract awarded in July 2008. Having been started in December 2008, construction | 20 | Desalination & Water Reuse | February-March 2013 of the plant was completed in September 2011, successfully meeting all the delivery standards, and the plant achieved its full operational capacity by October 2011. The Shuweihat S2 plant is now fully operational, providing 1,510 MW of electricity and 100 MIGD (454,610 m3/d) of potable water under a 25-year power and water purchase agreement with the Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Company. Giant evaporator When delivered by Doosan in 2011, Shuweihat S2 was the world's largest desalination plant to be commissioned, producing potable water for use by more than 1.5 million people. Measuring 28.5 m in width, 11.2 m in height, and 100.8 m in length, the multi-stage flash (MSF) evaporator is still currently the largest of its kind to be in operation, with the capacity to produce 16.7 MIGD (76,000 m³/d) of distillate. Before Shuweihat S2, the 16.3 MIGD (74,000 m³/d) evaporator installed for the Shuaibah
