BUSINESS Metito lands Bechtel SWRO desalination in Australia Dubai-based Metito has landed two new seawater reverse-osmosis (SWRO) desalination plants in Australia and is currently nearing completion of one in Qatar. The Australian plants are part of a longterm partnership with Bechtel International Inc and are located on Curtis Island near Gladstone, Queensland. Bechtel is constructing three separate liquefied natural gas plants on the island, and Metito's work includes design, fabrication and supervision of installation of its own equipment including SWRO desalination plants and sewage treatment plants to be used for the construction sites. The specification required these plants to meet challenging feed water quality and very strict discharge limits. To meet the needs for the construction schedule, plant construction was fast-tracked. The Qatar desalination plant will supply water for drinking, district cooling and irrigation with a total capacity of 35,000 m3/d at the Pearl Qatar resort. A project requirement was maintaining water salinity at less than 400 ppm and complying with local environmental standards. GHD appointed OE for Huntington Beach SWRO Consultant GHD is to lead a multidisciplinary team serving as owner's engineer (OE) for the 50 MGD (189,000 m3/d) Huntingdon Beach desalination project in California, USA. The team will undertake a range of advisory and engineering services as OE, including assisting developer Poseidon Resources (Surfside) LLC to prepare contractual bid documentation paving the way for the engineering, procurement and construction of the project. GHD is also OE for Poseidon's Carlsbad desalination plant. The Huntington Beach project is in the final phase of the permitting process. Poseidon has applied for a Coastal Development Permit from the California Coastal Commission and expects the commission to consider approval of the permit later this year. This would be the final permit necessary to commence project construction, anticipated for second half 2013. The OE team will undertake a range of advisory and engineering services, including assisting Poseidon to prepare contractual bid documentation paving the way for the engineering, procurement and construction of the project. GHD will be supported by firms with extensive experience in implementing large-scale projects in Southern California and internationally. This team includes: PricewaterhouseCoopers, Snell & Wilmer, Valoriza, ARB Inc., Butier Engineering, Dr Scott Jenkins from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography and Dudek. Spanish prominent in Al Ghubrah desalination bidders Spanish companies were involved with five of seven consortia that were invited by the Oman Tender Board to submit proposals for the Al Ghubrah Independent Water Project (IWP). The IWP will be based on a 42 million MIGD (191,000 m3/d) capacity seawater reverse-osmosis desalination plant. However the groups involving Tecnidas Reunidas and Valoriza Agua were not among the bidders when tenders were opened on 25 July 2012. A decision is still awaited. The seven consortia were: l Marubeni Corporation, Japan, with Oman Oil Company and National Power & Water, Oman l Hyflux, Singapore, with Mitsui of Japan and Al Tahir of Oman l Acciona Agua, Spain, with Samsung of South Korea and Sogex of Oman l Malakoff International, Malaysia, with Cadagua of Spain and Sumitomo of Japan l Tecnidas Reunidas, Spain, with compatriot Aqualia and Orascom Construction of Egypt l Grupo Cobra, Spain, with compatriots Inima (now Korean-owned) and Zubair Corporation of Oman l Valoriza Agua, Spain, with Septech of Dubai (which built a 5 MIGD (22,700 m3/d) mobile seawater desalination plant at Al Ghubrah). | 8 | Desalination & Water Reuse | August-September 2012 Arizona RO plant gets solar energy boost The Arizona town of Gila Bend is to build a 460 kW photovoltaic solarenergy system to power its 1 MGD (3,785 m3/d) reverse-osmosis (RO) water treatment system. Solon Corporation of Tucson, a subsidiary of the German Solon Group, announced on 10 July 2012 that it had begun construction of the plant. Solon will engineer, design, construct and commission the fixedtilt system, expected to be completed later this year. As a full-service system provider, Solon will continue to operate and maintain the system on behalf of the town once it is operational. Once completed, the system is expected to provide an 86% energy usage offset to the town's RO facility, resulting in significant annual electricity cost savings. Veolia sells boilerfeed pretreatment Pretreatment for high-purity boiler feedwater is to be supplied to three refineries on the Gulf of Mexico in the USA by Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies. After supplying a system incorporating its patented Actiflo® Turbo clarification technology for the Valero refinery in Norco, Louisiana, Veolia was asked to supply two other refineries on the Gulf coast. The plant in Norco uses the treated water for cooling-tower makeup, service water and the new high-purity boiler feedwater treatment system. The boiler treatment process includes multimedia filtration and sodium zeolite ion-exchange softening followed by reverse-osmosis membrane filtration to polish the water to a high level. As a result, San Antonio-based Valero will be able to produce over 1,300 GPM (82 L/s) of high-purity water used for makeup to steam boilers and the steam methane reformer, which produces hydrogen for refinery operations. The Actiflo Turbo microsand ballasted clarifier is a packaged unit designed to treat up to 4,000 GPM (252 L/s) to reduce suspended solids, colloidal solids and turbidity.
