IDA & AFFILIATES Papers called for IDA's 2013 World Congress A call for papers was issued on 14 May 2012 by the International Desalination Association (IDA) for its 2013 World Congress Desalination: A Promise for the Future. Abstracts for the congress, which will be held in Tianjin, China, during 20-25 October 2013, will be accepted by IDA between 15 July and 1 October 2012. Authors whose abstracts have been accepted will be notified in December, and the first draft manuscripts will be due on 1 February 2013. The theme of the 2013 IDA World Congress emphasizes the importance of desalination as a sustainable, reliable source to meet the world's growing water needs. Tracks in the technical program will cover: l The governance and finance of desalination l Sustainable desalination: environmental responsibility and adapting to climate change l Efficient and effective operations l Innovative desalination technologies l Desalination culture and heritage The Technical Program Committee will be co-chaired by Khoo Teng Chye and Professor Wang Shi Chang, both directors of IDA. Khoo is currently the executive director of the Centre for Liveable Cities, Ministry of National Development in Singapore. Prof Wang holds a distinguished position at the Chemical Engineering Research Center, School of Chemical Engineering & Technologies and is director of the Desalination & Membrane Technology Center at Tianjin University. "The IDA World Congress is the pre-eminent platform for water and desalination experts from around the world to share their knowledge and exchange ideas. We invite authors to submit their abstracts for previously unpublished papers for consideration at this event, which takes place in one of the world's most important emerging desalination markets," said Patricia Burke, IDA secretary general. Submissions will be evaluated on the basis of contribution and impact, originality, accuracy, quality of presentation, and appropriate comparison to related works. Abstracts must be submitted online to the IDA Paper Management Site by logging in at www.idadesal.org. For questions or assistance, please contact the World Congress Technical Program Manager, Darlene Seta at papers@idadesal.org, call IDA at +1 978 887 0410, or visit the website for more details. IDA and PUB to cooperate on water training/education The International Desalination Association (IDA) and PUB, Singapore's national water agency, signed an agreement on 2 July 2012 to explore opportunities for mutual cooperation in promising areas of training and education regarding water. IDA launched its new Desalination Academy at July's Singapore International Water Week. PUB's Academy@ WaterHub supports the training and development needs of Singapore's water industry. The possible areas of collaboration under this memorandum of understanding include training and education in desalination and water reuse, and the organization of IDA Desalination Academy training programs held alongside key conferences such as Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) and the Saudi Water and Power Forum, Jeddah, where the academy will hold its next set of training courses. The MOU also allows for PUB to tap into the roster of master teachers who are members of the IDA Desalination Academy's faculty for desalination and water reuse training courses for the Asia-Pacific region. Likewise, PUB would provide speakers to share insights into Singapore's public-private-partnership approach on desalination or water reuse in IDA's training courses and host technical tours to PUB facilities. IDA Congress exhibition floorplan available online The International Desalination Association (IDA) has made the exhibition floor plan and exhibitor application for the IDA World Congress 2013 available online. With 11,000 square meters of prime space, the exhibition will be the largest ever staged at the biennial event. New for 2013 is a Loyalty Discount program for companies that exhibited at the last two IDA World Congresses. Another new feature is that the Exhibition will be open to all visitors who register onsite at the venue registration desk and show a business card related to desalination and water reuse. Those attendees interested in the Exhibition only do not have to pay the full registration fee that includes access to the Technical Program and other World Congress week activities. Spaces have already been booked and IDA anticipates a similar response to the last World Congress, where the first two halls of stands were sold out within 30 days of the announcement of the Floor Plan. The Exhibition is laid out to optimize traffic flow, with a 1,000 m2 Tianjin Pavilion and an Affiliates Row near the center of the hall. The overall configuration of the Meijiang Conference and Exhibition Center places the Exhibition Hall close to the Technical Program so that delegates can easily intersperse booth visits with attending the Technical sessions. IDA expects 2,000 delegates to attend the 2013 World Congress, as China is one of the most important emerging markets for desalination and water reuse. For questions or to reserve a space, please contact Leslie Merrill at lmerrill@idadesal.org. | 48 | Desalination & Water Reuse | August-September 2012
