Sorek - Low water costs, high environmental profile _________ Fredi Lokiec – EVP Special Projects, IDE Technologies Ltd. ___ IDE TECHNOLOGIES is currently building Sorek, a 150 million m3/year seawater reverse-osmosis (SWRO) desalination facility. When it becomes operational in the second half of 2013, Sorek will be among the world's largest desalination plants, succeeding Hadera (127 million m3/year), which Israel-based IDE completed in 2009, and Ashkelon (118.7 million m3/y), which the company finished in 2005. In the project's 25-year build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract signed in 2010, the initial price of Sorek's water was set at just NIS 2.19/m3 (US$ 0.59/m3). A joint venture, Sorek Desalination Ltd (SDL), was established to execute the project. SDL has two shareholders: l Technologies Ltd (51%) IDE l Hutchison Water International Holdings Pte Ltd (HWIH) (49%). HWIH is wholly owned by Hutchison TechnoLogicaL innovaTion Over the past four decades, IDE has earned a reputation as one of the desalination industry's technology leaders. In designing Sorek, IDE employed all the state-of-theart membrane, energy-recovery and other technologies that it has perfected through its deployment of some the world's largest SWRO and thermal desalination plants. The plant is being constructed 2.2 km from the Mediterranean shore at the Sorek site, approximately 15 km south of Tel Aviv. The plant's basic concept is to have two 75 million m3/y plants able to operate separately from, and independently of, one another. Most subsystems will be duplicated, with the exception of the Intake System and the Independent Power Plant, which will be common for the entire 150 million m3/year facility but designed with the required redundancy to serve each plant separately. SDL will implement the project through three main corporate entities: 1. An Engineering, Procurement and Construction Partnership (EPC) 2. An Operation and Maintenance Company (O&M) 3. An Independent Power Producer sub-contractor (IPP). Editor's Note: The Sorek seawater reverse-osmosis desalination plant will be among the world's largest when it is completed in Israel next year. To achieve this capacity while simultaneously delivering the lowest possible water price and a minimized environmental footprint, IDE incorporated a broad range of technological and financial engineering innovations into the plant's design. This article outlines the innovations which enabled IDE to complete this cutting-edge project.
