26 Research December 2017 Water. desalination + reuse To what extent is public opinion a barrier to water reuse in your markets today, for the following purposes? Public opinion is perceived as a much stronger barrier to water reuse in situations where the water will be used for drinking or watering food crops Survey respondents were asked to rate the extent to which public opin- ion is a barrier to water reuse in their markets for different purposes. Perhaps unsurprisingly, public opinion was rated most strongly as a barrier to direct potable reuse (DPR), scoring 3.84 out of a possible five. A whopping 70.37 per cent rated public opinion as either a "strong" or "very strong" barrier to DPR, with 50.93 per cent opting for "very strong". • Public opinion as a barrier to market developments is seen as strongest by far in the case of direct potable reuse (DPR) • Respondents working for municipalities are acutely aware of public opinion as a barrier to DPR • Respondents working in Europe tend to see public opinion as more of a barrier To gain free access to the full research report, Water Reuse: Drivers, Innovations and Public Perceptions, visit www.desalination.biz/downloads PUBLIC PERCEPTIONS RESPONDENTS: Americas 108, Asia Pac 114, MEA 136, Europe 97, Industrial 178, municipal 163, agricultural 42 EXTENT TO WHICH PUBLIC OPINION IS A BARRIER TO REUSE ALL RESPONDENTS: 309 5 4 3 2 1 0 Score 3.84 2.87 2.32 1.95 1.68 WHAT THE SCORES MEAN: 1 very weak barrier 2 weak barrier 3 mid-level barrier 4 strong barrier 5 very strong barrier "Advertisement featuring the sheikhs" chief/ head of department, industrial plant owner/ operator, MEA "Media" technical/ engineer - lead, technology company, Europe "Separation between drinking water and other uses" director, engineering consultancy, Europe "Using terms like "toilet to tap" sales, manufacturer, Americas "Integrated, fit-for-purpose frameworks" chief/ head of department, water authority, Asia Pacific "Pilot projects with a trusted organisation such as World Health Organisation" chief/ head of department, engineering consultancy, MEA "The argument for water independence from other states" director, technology company, Americas "A technical test that ensures that the water delivered is safe for drinking" technical/ engineer, industrial plant owner/ operator, Asia Pacific "Improved water governance" chief/ head of departments, OEM, Americas "Overemphasis on risks versus benefits of water reuse" technical/ engineer - lead, EPC, Europe "All residents must receive reuse water - no discrimination" chief/ head of department, municipality, MEA "Scepticism of the motivations of the privatised water industry" technical/ engineer, university, Europe "Awareness of the status of the country in the world ranking for reuse" director, engineering consultancy, MEA What else could influence public opinion about water reuse in your markets?
