| 50 | Desalination & Water Reuse | August-September 2015 IDA & AFFILIATES Water reuse ConferenCe In 2016 the IDA will hold its first conference focused on water reuse. The event will be held on 26-27 September 2016 at the Hyatt Regency Nice, Palais de la Méditeranée in Nice, France and will feature experts from around the world covering leading-edge strategies and technology for advanced municipal and industrial water reuse programmes. A call for papers and more details about the conference are to follow. For more information email: conferences@idadesal.org. são Paulo to host World Congress 2017 The IDA has selected São Paulo, Brazil as the venue for its 2017 World Congress on desalination and water reuse. The event will take place in the second half of 2017 – specific dates and details about the venue are being finalized. IDA's site selection committee and the IDA board chose São Paul from three final candidates – Kuwait City, Kuwait; and Busan, South Korea were the other two. Ida felloWshIP aWard The IDA has awarded its prestigious 2014-15 Fellowship to Dr Raed AI Bashitialshaaer, of Lund University, Sweden. Dr Bashitialshaaer will receive US$ 10,000 and will participate in a six-week attachment with the Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW), in Ruwi, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman. PAEW is the host agency for the 2014-2015 IDA Fellowship Programme. Dr Bashitialshaaer has worked extensively in desalination in such areas as brine discharge modeling and analysis of impacts especially for the Middle East region. And he has written a number of papers for the Red Sea-Dead Sea Canal Project. His research experience and fields of interest are: environmental research; freshwater supply; cooperation between countries; water conflicts and solutions; desalination and brine discharge modeling; environmental impacts from desalination plants; and wastewater management. The goal of the IDA Fellowship Award Programme is to facilitate the advancement of global expertise in desalination and water reuse through the exchange of talents, knowledge and skills. It is now considered to be one of the industry's most prestigious awards, recognizing individuals who have demonstrated exceptional professional achievements and dedication to advancing desalination and water reuse. aMta and aWWa 2016 MeMbrane teChnology ConferenCe and exPosItIon Registration for the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and the American Membrane Technology Association (AMTA) 2016 membrane technology event will open on 26 August 2015. Presentations will include: planning, management and regulations; coastal and inland brackish water desalination and seawater desalination; membrane filtration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis; ultrafiltration and microfiltration; membrane bioreactors; and water reuse applications. The conference has grown to more than 1,100 attendees. Each year it reveals new directions in water and wastewater treatment technologies, desalting and membrane bioreactor applications. The call for abstracts closed on 19 June, 2015. Important dates for those who have submitted abstracts are: 31 August 2015 acceptance notifications; 2 November 2015 papers and copyright due; and 2 December 2015 PowerPoint or poster due. desalInatIon for the envIronMent The European Desalination Society's event, Desalination for the environment: clean water and energy, will be held in Rome, 22–26 May 2016, to look at advances towards providing affordable fresh water. The focal point of the conference will be why and how desalination should be integrated into national or regional water management plans, ensuring socio- economic and environmental benefits. The conference will review the most recent developments in desalination technology, its cost and extent of application, including socio-economic and environmental issues. It will bring together research scientists, decision makers, managers, design engineers and operators from water companies, industries, government departments, consulting firms, research institutes and universities. deadlInes Submission of abstracts – 30 November 2015. Notification of acceptance – 30 December 2015. Papers submitted – 28 February 2016. desalInatIon WIth solar energy Course The European Desalination Society will run its Desalination with Solar Energy, four-day intensive course May 10–13, 2016 at Almería, Spain. The course will be given by researchers and scientists from Plataforma Solar de Almería (CIEMAT-PSA). Lecturers will be, course director, Julián Blanco, associate director of PSA and coordinator of EERA JP-CSP; Diego-César Alarcón-Padilla, head of the Solar Desalination Unit of CIEMAT and operating agent of Solar Energy and Water Processes and Applications Task VI; and Guillermo Zaragoza, coordinator of the Renewable Energy Desalination Action Group of the European Innovation Partnership on Water (European Commission). Rising energy costs and the impending exhaustion of conventional energy resources make the development of desalination technologies associated with the use of renewable energy a promising prospect. This is especially true in the case of solar energy, as the regions with greater water shortages tend to be those with higher solar radiation. The course will provide a complete review of conventional and innovative desalination technologies, suitable to be coupled with solar energy. Key skills attendees will learn include: • how to design and assess the performance of static solar collector fields to provide low-temperature process heat for specific thermal desalination technologies; and • how to calculate and design parabolic trough solar fields to provide process heat to MED or MSF thermal desalination processes.
