SAN DIEGO CONVENTION CENTRE, SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, USA – 30 AUGUST - 4 SEPTEMBER 2015 International Desalination Association August-September 2015 | Desalination & Water Reuse | 37 | IDA International Desalination Association World Congress on Desalination & Water Reuse Renewable Water Resources to Meet Global Needs Timely as California shows the way The highly anticipated 2015 IDA World Congress takes place 30 August- 4 September in San Diego, California, USA, and it is expected to be the largest event in World Congress history. Widely recognized as the premier event for the global desalination and water reuse industry, the 2015 IDA World Congress will present its most expansive technical programme to date, as well as an 11,000-m 2 exhibition spotlighting more than 90 companies, exclusive plant tours, and extensive networking opportunities throughout World Congress week. In all, IDA expects that this World Congress will attract more than 1,500 delegates from around the world. The 2015 World Congress is replete with new highlights, from a series of interactive open forum panel discussions to its Innovation Theatre featuring presentations of groundbreaking products and services, an education day for students, and an invitation-only public outreach session where civic leaders can learn more about desalination and reuse from the experts. It also includes two co- located events, DesalTech 2015 and the AMTA Pre-Congress Workshop, and the IDA Academy of Desalination and Water Reuse will offer two courses for delegates who want additional opportunities to expand their technical knowledge while at the World Congress. This year, IDA will offer a special exhibition-only day pass for individuals who want access to only that part of the congress, and delegates are invited to attend a special sponsored event, A Celebration of California at the world-famous Birch Aquarium at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. More information is available at wc.idadesal.org. The theme for the 2015 IDA World Congress – Renewable Water Resources to Meet Global Needs – is even more timely and relevant than we could have imagined. California, the site of this World Congress, is experiencing a record drought that has seen water resources shrink to unprecedented low levels. While droughts are not new to this region, the scope of the problem is worse than ever, and the situation could become even more severe by the end of the century. NASA scientist, Dr Benjamin Cook, lead author of a study of megadroughts, will present his sobering findings in a keynote address, shining new light on the importance of desalination and water reuse as part of an integrated water resources management strategy. Desalination has the unique ability to provide the only new source of fresh water on our planet, and water reuse extends the lifecycle of our world's most precious resource while also offering many economic and environmental benefits. California is taking the lead in large-scale, direct potable reuse. Advances and best practices in both desalination and reuse will be explored in depth during World Congress week. A major topic for this World Congress is our industry's drive to sustainability. No longer is sustainability a concept or a distant goal. It is quickly becoming a reality, and much of this movement is a result of technology advancements since our last World Congress. The IDA World Congress is the most important global event for the desalination and water reuse industry. It provides a point of connection that brings together stakeholders from all aspects of the desalination and reuse community to explore new solutions to the world's water scarcity issues. I hope that you will take advantage of this great opportunity by joining us in San Diego. With its rich technical programme, industry-leading exhibition, and unparalleled networking opportunities, the IDA World Congress is the ideal place to exchange ideas, expand your knowledge and make important new connections in this exciting new world. Dr Abdullah Al-Alshaikh IDA president SAN DIEGO CONVENTION CENTRE , CALIFORNIA, USA – AUGUST 30 - SEPTEMBER 4 2015
