business May-June 2012 | Desalination & Water Reuse | 7 | Hong Kong filter deal goes to Xylem Water technology firm, Xylem, has won a contact to provide clarification and filtration systems for the expansion of the Tai Po Water Treatment Works in Hong Kong that will double the works' capacity to 800 Ml/d. The project aims to up the resilience and reliability of the water supply in Hong Kong and share the loading of other water treatment works for supplying drinking water to Kowloon West and the Central and Western districts of Hong Kong Island. Xylem is working with ATAL Engineering in Hong Kong to deliver the technologies for Tai Po Water Treatment Works. Xylem will provide its dissolved air flotation system, Leopold ClariDAF and its Leopold Type S underdrain solutions for the project. Associate director of ATAL Engineering, Barry Lee, said: "Xylem's Leopold systems were chosen because of their proven efficiency, reliability and reduced life cycle costs, as well as Xylem's local presence and commitment to delivering tailored aftermarket service for customers." Leopold Clari-DAF systems create millions of microbubbles to float solid particles to the surface of the water where they are removed by mechanical skimming or hydraulic de-sludging. The manufacturer said its Leopold Type S underdrain features "closely spaced, non- clogging orifices for uniform distribution of wash water and air to promote trouble-free operation and to clean every corner of the filter without media upset, reducing maintenance costs and downtime". Xylem's regional director, greater Asia, Allan Hendry, said, the order for Tai Po was "one of the largest orders for our Leopold products to date. He said the second phase of the project will begin this year. ContRaCt&tenDeRneWs MWH/BC team to run US$ 2.7 billion San Diego project e City of San Diego, California has selected the environmental engineering, consulting, and construction team of MWH/Brown and Caldwell to manage and assist in the delivery of the city's US$ 2.7 billion drinking water programme, Pure Water San Diego. Brown and Caldwell has joined consultant MWH Global and local process engineering and water quality firm Trussell Technologies for the initial five-year, US$ 30 million contract that includes management services to move the programme from planning into implementation. Under the contract, which began in January 2015, the MWH/ Brown and Caldwell team will provide strategic planning, project delivery, programme controls, predesign of conveyance and treatment facilities, design oversight/management, pilot testing of proposed technologies, regulatory permitting, outreach and public education, quality management, and risk mitigation services. e programme includes a 75 Ml/d water purification facility which is scheduled for operation by 2023. e programme has a long-term goal of producing purified water at 445 Ml/d – one third of San Diego's future drinking water supply – by 2035. And Pure Water San Diego will also greatly reduce the volume of treated wastewater discharged to the ocean. Director of client services at Brown and Caldwell, Jay Patil, said: "With San Diego now leading the way in large-scale, state-of-the-art potable reuse implementation, many other communities will begin to look at their water supplies differently." San Antonio kicks off brackish desalination programme San Antonio Water System (SAWS) in Texas has begun a phased brackish water desalination programme that will provide the county with potable water at over 150 Ml/d. Output from the 60 Ml/d first facility will comprise 10 Ml/d of filtered well water blended with permeate from a 50 Ml/d brackish water reverse osmosis plant. SAWS said it would complete phase two in 2021 with the third and final stage complete in 2026. e first phase project manager is Black and Veatch, the process design engineer is Tetra Tech, the construction manager is Zachry- Parsons and the mechanical contractor is Dynamic System. Biwater is the reverse osmosis system supplier for the project and will be responsible for the RO trains, design of ancillary equipment as well as the RO system operation design.
