BUSINESS | 10 | Desalination & Water Reuse | May-June 2015 Doosan lands zero liquid wastewater package at Iraqi oil refinery Doosan Hydro Technology has won an order for a zero liquid discharge (ZLD) wastewater treatment package at the US$ 6 billion, 140,000 barrels-a-day Karbala oil refinery under construction at South Karbala, 100km from the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. e product water will be reused in the refinery plant. Solid waste will be incinerated and reverse osmosis brine will be sent to a brine concentrator to complete the ZLD process. e package comprises an American Petroleum Institute oil separator; dissolved air flotation; a membrane bio-reactor; activated carbon Desalitech ups US paper firm's pure water recovery and lops energy use filters; first, second and third reverse osmosis; soening; thickener; and dehydrators. e order was issued by SK Engineering and Construction as part of the consortium led by Korean conglomerate, Hyundai Engineering and Construction. e third member of the consortium is GS Engineering and Construction, which is the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the refinery. Construction of the refinery started in February 2014 and is scheduled for completion within 54 months. FCC Aqualia bags mining deal duo Water management company FCC Aqualia, has won two water supply and purification contracts in Chile's mining and petrochemical industries worth a total of € 27 million (US$ 24 million). Chilean company, Codelco has appointed FCC's water management company to perform groundwater treatment services using a nanofiltration plant for the Ovejería hydraulic barrier in Huechún, metropolitan region. e € 12 million (US$ 10.5 million) contract covers the engineering, construction and commissioning of a 100 l/s nanofiltration plant and a 12-year operation and maintenance deal. e aim is to ensure guaranteed quality water intake with a low dissolved salt content. And FCC is to build a 330 l/s treatment plant at Cadellada to supply the towns of Colina and Batuco north of Santiago de Chile. e € 15 million (US$ 13 million) turnkey project, includes the design, equipment, construction, commissioning and temporary operation over a year and a half. Subsequently, the company will offer operational assistance for another year. Black & Veatch wins consultant contract for giant Jeddah desalination project Saudi Arabia's Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) has appointed consultancy, Black & Veatch, as the engineering and design consultant for a major desalination project that will supply the kingdom's second largest city, Jeddah. e 400 Ml/d Jeddah 4 reverse osmosis (RO) project will increase water resources for the city's five million people. When completed, Jeddah 4 will be among Saudi Arabia's largest desalination plants. Arizona-based paper maker, Doubletree Paper Mills, says it has increased its purified water recovery by 20% at its Gila Bend plant since replacing its reverse osmosis water treatment system in 2014 with Desalitech's ReFlex RO system. e modification has also cut wastewater output by almost two thirds and lopped 25% off energy consumption says Doubletree. Doubletree purifies groundwater and recycles wastewater with reverse osmosis for use in its paper production processes. e new water treatment system has doubled the plant's water production capacity to 2,000 litres a minute. Jeddah 4 will be tendered on an engineer, procure, construct basis. Black & Veatch will be responsible for studies of site and adjacent sea conditions, conceptual process and engineering design, and preparation of tender documents. In addition Black & Veatch will support SWCC during the tendering and award of the contract. Black & Veatch has worked with SWCC since 1993, notably on the Shoaibah to Jeddah Water Transmission System. Doubletree previously treated groundwater pumped from a well to the plant with a conventional reverse osmosis system at a water recovery rate of 75%, producing 250 l of wastewater from every 1,000 l of raw water. "is is a solid upgrade that has enabled us to increase water production without any additional stress on the existing facility," said Doubletree's vice president of finance, Samir Kanuga. Desalitech says the installation brings its number of project wins to over 30, solidifying its place as a new but serious contender in the water treatment industry. e Australian subsidiary of Spanish water technology firm, Valoriza Agua, has won a design and construct contract to deliver a 16.5 Ml/d water treatment plant to provide drinking water for the Western Australian mining town, Newman and the mine. e plant will include brackish water reverse osmosis and an ultraviolet treatment system to treat a mix of flows from drinking water boreholes sited close to mining activities. It will replace an existing water treatment facility that supplies the mine and the town. e initiative will provide the people of Newman, 1,500 km northeast of Perth, and the mine with better quality drinking water quality. e new facility is scheduled for operation by the end of 2015. e project is for owner of the Newman pit, the Newman Mining Company – a subsidiary of mining giant, BHP Billiton Iron Ore.
