UtILItY WeeK | 12th - 18th September 2014 | 5 UK thinktank IPPR has called on the government to consider "major reform" of its energy policy, shifting its support from a centralised gen- eration model to one that backs "smart", distributed electricity technologies. The thinktank's report said distributed technologies offer an alternative to centralised genera- tion, but they are being held back by a bias in favour of the large- scale utility business model. "It is time to break with the past and embrace the bright new future that these technologies offer," the report said. It proposed scrapping the capacity market in favour of a new regulatory model for the networks that addressed the need to main- tain system security. It also said half-hourly settle- ment of electricity system balanc- ing should be introduced in the residential sector as soon as possi- ble to support smart technologies, as well as feed-in tariffs to support energy efficiency technologies. IPPR said renewable technolo- gies, smart appliances and highly efficient lights could lead to a cheaper, cleaner, more competitive and secure electricity system. ElECTRiCiTy Wastewater solutions provider Lanes Group has recently completed the relining of two 900mm-diameter sections of highway culvert. Ultraviolet (UV) lining technology (pictured) was used to rehabilitate 60 metres of pipe, the company said. UV light is used to cure a resin- impregnated liner inside a damaged drain. The technique is faster than hot cure drain lining and does not generate contaminated wastewater.
