National Grid said a derated capacity margin of 5 per cent meant there was "no cause for alarm; no room for complacency" about blackouts. eNerGY eNerGY 2.9m 64% Centrica names next chairman The tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions saved in 2012 by the shift to renewable power sources Members of the public who would support fracking if it means cheaper energy bills, according to pollster Viewsbank "An energy promise they admitted 24 hours later they might not be able to keep" Prime minister David Cameron dismisses Ed Miliband's proposed price freeze in his keynote speech at the Conservative conference Centrica has named its next non-executive chairman as Richard Haythornthwaite. Haythornthwaite will take up his role on 1 January 2014, replacing the current chairman of the board, Sir Roger Carr, who will step down at the end of this year. Upon his appointment, Haythornthwaite will also become a member and chairman of Centrica's nominations committee, and a member of Centrica's remuneration committee. He will also join the board of Centrica as a nonexecutive director on 14 October. Haythornthwaite is chairman of Mastercard, and the operating businesses at PSI, a private fund. Scott Byrom @ScottAByrom: Fixed standing charge, quicker switching process, encourage new entrants, promote energy efficiency and FIT back to 43p! Rob Worsley @robjworsley: Means dependent energy pricing? Might be too complicated and cause confusion though. Timothy Burr @timburr1: Give power companies the same statutory power that water companies have to lower the costs of infrastructure in private land. Tweet of the week Richard Benyon @RichardBenyonMP: On back benches! Three and a half really fun years with much achieved. Really appreciate time working with outstanding ministers and officials Online comments My own limited study on the house prices in an area affected by windfarms shows a huge fall in house prices – with some affected houses failing to sell even after a more than 30% drop in asking price and one property has been abandoned. Similar houses further away from the windfarm have retained their value even in the housing recession. Mary Pearson It is true that bills have a green tax element in them, but that hardly bears one way or another on whether generators are under enough competition. The latter is presumably about liquidity in the power and gas markets and not RMR. Nickpicker UtILItY WeeK | 11th - 17th OctOber 2013 | 5
