BUSINESS Marubeni lowest of six for Al Mirfa project A Marubeni-fronted consortium led the way when bids were opened by the Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA) on 6 March 2013 for the Al Mirfa Independent Power & Water Project. The build-own-operate contract is for a greenfield project, which will have a net power generation of 1,100 MW, in addition to the present 400 MW, and 30 MIGD (136,000 m³/d) reverse-osmosis seawater desalination capacity added to the 23 MIGD (105,000 m³/d) currently installed at the plant. As previously reported in D&WR, the ADWEA received bids from six consortia for the Mirfa IWPP scheme which includes a 52.5 MIGD seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant. The water price for the lowest bid (both for water and power) was from the Marubeni-led consortium, with Acciona as SWRO contractor, at AED 12.2 (US $3.32) per 1,000 imperial gallons. This equates to (US$ 0.73/m3). The prices for the other five consortia (with SWRO contractor), listed by lead developer, were: • GDF Suez (Degrémont): AED 14.5 (US$ 3.95)/1,000 gal (US$ 0.87/m3) • EDF (Veolia): AED 13.6 (US$ 3.70)/1,000 gal (US$ 0.81/m3) • Sembcorp (Abengoa): AED 12.6 (US$ 3.43)/1,000 gal (US$ 0.75/m3) • Acwa Power (Valoriza): AED 12.6 (US$ 3.43)/1,000 gal (US$ 0.75/m3) • Sumitomo Corporation (Cadagua): AED 19.6 (US$ 5.34)/1,000 gal (US$ 1.17/m3). ZWT wins oil-camp replacement RO plant order in Libya Three turnkey reverse-osmosis water treatment plants are to be provided by Zulal Water Technology (ZWT) for the Gialo, Waha and Essider oil camps operated in Libya by Waha Oil Company. The units will be replacements for existing GE/Ionics electrodialysis reversal (EDR) plants. Waha Oil is one of Libya's largest oil producers, and the award follows a competitive tender process. The total capacity of the three proposed Zulal plants exceeds 4,000 m3/d. Waha Oil has requested that the plants CONtraCt BrIEfS ____ For more details, visit www.desalination.biz __ be commissioned in as short a timeframe as possible, and ZWT is targeting completion of the project during Q4 2013. Iftikhar-ul-Haq, Managing Director of ZWT, commented: "This contract award reflects ZWT's strong reputation and execution track record within the Libyan market." The engineering manager of Waha Oil commented: "Our existing GE-Ionics EDR plants are in poor condition and in urgent need of replacement. We selected ZWT based on the strength of their technical proposal." CadagUa OmaN jOB wOrth US$ 300 mIllION More details were released on 13 February 2013 by Ferrovia of Spain about the contract announced in November 2012 for a consortium involving its subsidiary Cadagua for the Al Ghubrah desalination plant in Oman. Under the US$ 300 million contract, Cadagua, in partnership with Malakoff International Limited and Sumitomo Corporation, will design, construct, operate and maintain the 191,000 m3/d seawater reverseosmosis plant in Muscat for 20 years. dISk-fIltErS tO prOtECt aShdOd Uf mEmBraNES Filtration manufacturer Amiad has signed a contract, valued at US$ 1.67 million, to provide an Arkal Super | 10 | Desalination & Water Reuse | May-June 2013 NanoH2O membranes chosen for Palmachim expansion Two additional 36,000 m3/d trains are to be added to the Palmachim seawater reverse-osmosis (RO) desalination plant in Israel using QuantumFlux (Qfx) high rejection membranes manufactured by NanoH2O Inc. Via Maris Desalination Ltd, owner and operator of the Palmachim plant, purchased Qfx membranes for the existing 36,000 m3/d RO train in 2012. "After one year of small-scale pilot tests and eight months of full-scale operation of the initial 36,000 m3/d train, the membranes from NanoH2O provided us with the best performance we ever experienced," said Avner Hermony, Palmachim desalination plant manager for Via Maris Desalination, a subsidiary of Global Environmental Solutions. "Given that experience, we will now add two more trains of Qfx membranes by the end of 2013." "This is a significant milestone for our company," said Nicholas Dyner, vice president of sales and marketing for NanoH2O. "Within a year of our official launch into the membrane desalination market, we have demonstrated impressive acceleration in product development and manufacturing capacity.
