The group developed a procedure regarding the safe storage and handling and PE pipe coils covering design and deci- sion-making; correctly storing coiled CE pipe; loading and unloading coiled pipe on trailers; and controlling the coiled pipe during jointing and re-rounding. Winner: SOUTHERN WATER – FOG & UNFLUSHABLES EDUCATIONAL AND BEHAVIOURAL CHANGE PROJECT In response to the 23,000 sewer blockages it had to contend with every year, Southern Water embarked on an educational programme about the responsible use of fat, oil, grease, wipes, sanitary items and small bathroom objects. The project has involved field teams giving advice to customers who live in hotspot areas; talks, presentations and media articles; the production of two Unflushables films, with the first reaching 16 million people; and the development of an augmented reality game for young people. Sewer blockages have since fallen to 17,500 a year while the number of internal floodings to customers' houses fell from 480 to 340. Health & Safety Initiative of the Year What the judges said: "This project is exactly the sort of thing the whole industry should be doing. It's focused on solving a problem and shows a comprehensive approach to the challenge." What the judges said: "This project solved a genuine health and safety problem that others will have experienced in the industry. It had demonstrable benefits and the potential for the knowledge to be disseminated more widely."
