4 The Quarterly December 2018 Water. desalination + reuse The Quarterly Large-scale seawater reverse osmosis projects were awarded across the Middle East during the third quarter of 2018, and a couple of projects are shaping up in the Americas SAUDI ARABIA Acwa Power shaves $0.01 off next-best price in Rabigh 3 bidding Acwa Power is off ering the most competitive price by $0.01 out of fi ve bidding consortia for Rabigh 3 independent power and water project. The off -taker, Saudi Arabia 's Water and Electricity Company (WEC), revealed that Acwa Power quoted a levelled cost of SAR 1.992 ($0.53) per cube of product water. The project is to develop, fi nance, procure, implement, operate, and maintain a 600,000 m3/d desalination facility in Rabigh, north of Jeddah, with potential to double capacity to 1.2 million m3/d. The contract is over 25 years. UNITED STATES City of Corpus Christi, Texas, issues desal RfI The City of Corpus Christi, Texas, and San Patricio Municipal Water District issued a request for information (RfI) on alternative water supplies including desalination. The Port of Corpus Christi already submitted requests for desalination discharge permits at Harbor Island and La Quinta Junction, in preparedness should a desalination project move ahead. Further, the City is undertaking a feasibility study with local engineers Freese and Nichols. Separately from the RfI, desalination provider Seven Seas Water submitted a proposal to the City for a 10 million gallons a day (37,854 m3/d) seawater desalination plant to be situated on land it leased privately. The company has proposed to fi nance, design, build, and own the plant, whose cost is pegged at $150 million, and to supply potable water to the City and the municipality. Seven Seas was to respond offi cially to the RfI. $500 million CHILE Solar desal plant to supply Chilean mines approved Trends Industrial's ambitious, multi- client, solar-powered desalination project to supply water to mines in Atacama desert, Chile, has been approved by the country's environmental agency. The project, named Energías y Aguas del Pacífi co (ENAPAC), underwent a year-long environmental impact study (EIS) which was passed by Chile 's Environmental Evaluation Commission on 26 September 2018. "This is an important project milestone. The response from industry, particularly mining projects, has been very positive and we're advancing conversations with many companies. We predict the EIA approval will accelerate those conversations and agreements," said Trends Industrial chief executive Rodrigo Silva. The proposal is for a 227,232 m3/d reverse osmosis desalination facility, powered by a 100 MW photovoltaic plant, and with a reservoir of 600,000 m3 capacity. The required investment is pegged at $500 million.
