One Water LA 2040 is a comprehensive water management strategy, developed over the last four- and-a-half years, to boost resilience across all aspects of the urban water cycle through 27 unique and challenging projects. Los Angeles is the most water-stressed city in the US. Only about 15 per cent of its water is sourced locally, from groundwater, the rest is imported, either from Northern California or other States. Resources are being depleted by extreme weather conditions, brought on by climate change, such as major droughts, and reduced snowfall in the mountains. Meanwhile, constant population increase has ramped up water demand to the point where public efforts to conserve water are growing insufficient. One Water LA 2040 is a collaborative plan that charts a course for managing the city's water resources, watersheds, and water facilities over the next quarter Century. It is led by LA Sanitation, the city's environmental agency, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the water utility, plus a steering committee, advisory group, and large group of over 500 stakeholders. Many initiatives outlined in the plan dovetail with Executive Directives, agreed by LA Mayor Eric Garcetti in 2015, to reduce the amount of water the city imports by 50 per cent by 2025 Water resilience Los Angeles' status as a film industry hub could come under threat if the city fails to address chronic water supply issues and upgrade its aging infrastructure. The ambitious One Water LA 2040 plan is a bold vision to build resilience through 27 separate projects. Los Angeles is a thriving metropolis that owes much of its success to one man, William Mulholland, who in the early 1900s came up with the idea to build a 200-mile-long aqueduct to bring water to the city from Owens Valley, east of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
