4 The Quarterly June 2018 Water. desalination + reuse The Quarterly New development loans in Asia and the Middle East support projects, and activity picks up in Africa and India GAZA Gaza large scale desal project secures €456 million funding The European Investment Bank (EIB) is tendering Gaza Central Desalination Plant and Associated Works Project, a er the scheme received funding pledges of €456 million ($560 million), or 80 per cent of the total project cost. The EU pledged €77.1 million. The project is for 150,000 m3/d of desalination capacity to supply two million people in Gaza, Palestine. The project has the support of 42 countries including Israel and 20 EU member states; and eight institutions. The EIB and Palestinian Authority signed a letter of intent, with the purpose of ensuring further successful preparation of the project. The European Commission and Palestinian Authority, together with the EIB, the Islamic Development Bank, and the World Bank, envisioned the scheme to construct a large scale desalination plant and power supply infrastructure, of which 15 per cent is renewable, and a distribution network, in response to an emerging water crisis in Gaza. Two million Palestinians living in Gaza rely almost exclusively on a single coastal aquifer that is over-drawn, and much of whose water supply does not meet World Health Organisation standards, creating health risks. "The successful pledging conference takes us a step closer to making a reality of this project to improve living conditions in Gaza," said EU commissioner for neighbourhood policy and enlargement negotiations, Johannes Hahn. CALIFORNIA, US IDE to pilot two new technologies in California, US IDE Technologies is to pilot two new technologies in California, US, including reverse osmosis for water reuse, and a membrane cleaning process that reduces chemical usage. The Central Coast Blue Advanced Water Purifi cation Centre Demo Facility, in partnership with the City of Pismo Beach Eco-Reuse, will pilot a preventative membrane maintenance approach that does away with chloramine, and avoids the formation of NDMA, in a 58,000 gallons a day (220 m3/d) facility. "We appreciate IDE's investment in piloting its technologies. This supports our eff orts to identify the best treatment approaches to create a reliable and sustainable water supply," said Ben Fine, City of Pismo Beach director of public works. The second project, at the Regional Recycled Water Advanced Purifi cation Centre Demo Facility, with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, will pilot a reverse osmosis (RO) process for wastewater reuse, to remove tiny particles, biodegradable pollutants and nitrogen compounds, in a 500,000 gallons a day (1,893 m3/d) plant. GLOBAL WATER AWARDS Suez and Middle East plants top 2018 Global Water Awards Suez scooped the Desalination Company of the Year Award, and plants in the Middle East topped the desalination categories at this year's Global Water Awards from Global Water Intelligence (GWI). Suez's win refl ects its takeover of GE Water in March 2017. The Municipal Desalination Plant of the Year Award went to Mirfa IWPP, Abu Dhabi. The 1,600 MW power and 239,000 m3/d desalination plant of Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA), comprises new SWRO facilities by Suez and existing MSF from Fisia Italimpianti, with Hyundai the lead engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor. The Industrial Desalination Plant of the Year Award was won by Japan IGCC Desal Plant, Saudi Arabia, a 60,000 m3/d RO plant treating a combination of seawater and treated wastewater, delivered by AES Arabia, with Technicas Reunidas as EPC contractor, and with membranes from Hydranautics. The Water Company of the Year Award was won by Evoqua, for its successful Initial Public Off ering on the New York Stock Exchange on 2 November 2017. The other winners comprised: Breakthrough Water Technology Company Award - Voltea; Water/Wastewater Project of the Year Award - Ulu Padan Wastewater Treatment Pilot, Singapore (see page 22); Industrial Water Project of the Year Award - Arla Foods Milky Way Water Reuse, Denmark; Water Deal of the Year Award - Kigali Bulk Water Supply, Rwanda; Water Technology Company of the Year Award - Xylem; Smart Water Company of the Year Award - Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), UAE; Smart Water Project of the Year Award - Mecca Smart Operations Project, Saudi Arabia; and the Water Leaders Award - Bangalore Water Supply & Sewerage Board, Bangalore, India.
