Water. desalination + reuse December 2017 The Quarterly 7 What happens next? What did people say? The editor Innovation is the key to unlocking LatAm IDA World Congress 2017 landed in São Paulo as Brazil's president Michel Temer was facing a crucial vote on whether he would be suspended and tried in relation to the country's Lavo Jato, or 'car wash' scandal, an eye-watering story of political and busi- ness corruption centred on state-owned oil giant Petrobras. Such a back- drop was a stark reminder of the challenges for devel- oping economies. Delegates and present- ers from LatAm were largely upbeat, however; certainly the region has a high, and growing demand for water. The challenge is to encourage private investors to engage, and to develop more fl exible funding models. System designs could adapt, too, embracing more decen- tralised networks, and low energy solutions. In the World Bank's Do- ing Business 2018 report, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru all rank in the top 50 per cent of world coun- tries (out of 190) for ease of doing business, and Argentina and Brazil, at 117 and 125 respectively, moved up the ranking. To grow these markets, a one-size-fi ts-all men- tality will surely fall short. Italian contractor Saipem, through its onshore engineering and construction division, and Cobra Montages Servicios y Agua of Spain, have signed up to provide desalination and conveyance services. Saipem will construct the pipeline, pumping stations, and associated control and maintenance systems. Operations are expected to begin in Q2 2020. "We will continue eff orts to capture demand for water infrastructure in Chile… through our machinery and infrastructure business area." Tatsuo Yasunaga, CEO and president, Mitsui & Co The deadline for expressions of interest was 23 November 2017. Out of the sum raised, $149.4 million went to the company, and will be used to pay down debt, and £349.2 million went to other stockholders. Veolia reestablished supplies of desalinated water to Saint Martin hospital on 12 September, having reinstated 30 per cent of capacity at its desalination plant, and installing an Aquamove mobile unit. Further mobile units including the RO Oceanus and RO Proteus were airli• ed to the island by Dutch Water Partners and Hatenboer Water. "A complete return to normal water production and distribution on the island will probably take several weeks or even months in some areas." Veolia capture demand for water infrastructure in Chile… through our machinery and infrastructure business area." Tatsuo Yasunaga, CEO and president, Mitsui "Investors like predictable business models and Honeywell was reportedly interested to acquire the company outright. Such demand has pushed up valuations a bit too much." Seeking Alpha The international press was quiet about the new projects, however English language Pakistani news website dawn.com noted that phased removal of subsidies on power and water have begun as part of Mohammed bin Salman's economic reforms.
