24 ALLIANCES 2018 Thames Water's eight2O alli- ance is the largest alliance in the water sector. It brings together global expertise from multiple sectors, providing design and building solutions for Thames Water. The alliance is carrying out £1.75bn of capital investment work during AMP6. The eight2O partners alongside Thames Water include two design and build JVs comprising Costain, Atkins, and Skanska, MWH and Balfour Beatty (SMB). MWH is also lead programme control and IBM is the technology innovation partner. eight2O has currently has more than 20 major projects mobilised and in construc- tion, ranging range from energy produced Combined Heat & Power plants at several Thames Water opera- tional sites, to major pipelines in the Thames Valley and mains replace- ment in central London. Efficient Service Delivery, better known as ESD, is the alliance formed to provide non-infrastructure services to Scottish Water for the six-year regulatory period ending March 2021, with the option for a six-year extension. ESD is a joint venture between MWH, Galliford Try and Black & Veatch, and is responsible for programme management, design, stakeholder engagement, construction and commis- sioning for water and wastewater treatment projects across all of Scotland on behalf of Scottish Water. The contract is estimated to be worth £560M which will enhance Scottish Water's services through both new-build and capital upgrade projects. A–er a slow start to the current regulatory period esd is reporting "good programme visibility", and has already taken on more than 100 projects including 13 works orders. Most of the work to The capital investment work during AMP6 with most of this investment has been targeted at schemes that have the greatest impact on key customer outcomes, such as leakage reduction, flooding and energy reduction. With a key focus on delivering long-term efficien- cies through opera- tions the eight2O early engagement strategy – final- ised as part of ECI – is now embedding the use of digital date has concerned feasibility and outline designs. ESD was targeting £70M of turnover by the end of year two with a peak in anticipated in years three, four and five. A forthcoming project that ESD will work on is Scottish Water's plan to combine two wastewater treatment works near Inverurie into one. At present, treatment works on design technology in projects as a standard approach. The most significant impact currently is the improved ability to communi- cate potential designs and solutions to operations, as it enables better knowledge sharing and is a mechanism for essential feedback. A mobile design and solution studio gives eigh- t2O access to consult all operations at any site or location. the site are located on both sides of the Aberdeen to Inverness railway line near Inverurie. The new plans will gradually decommission the works located at the Port Elphinstone side of the tracks, with the works on the opposite side transformed to offer improved efficiency and capability – achieved with a smaller overall site footprint. eight2O PARTNERS Thames Water; Costain / Atkins; Skanska / MWH / Balfour Beatty; MWH; IBM CLIENT Thames Water CONTRACT Five years, possible extension to 2025 TERM Five years, possible ten-year extension ESD PARTNERS Galliford Try, Black & Veatch, MWH Treatment CLIENT Scottish Water CONTRACT Provision of non-infrastructure services TERM Six years, possible six-year extension ALLIANCES 2018 eight2O focuses on greater impact schemes When two becomes one
