ALLIANCES 2018 13 AMK's work on the £250M upgrade project at Thames Water's Deephams Wastewater Treatment Works continues. The project is currently one of the largest water projects in the UK. The AMK joint venture, comprising AECOM, J Murphy and Kier, is only delivering the Deephams wastewater treatment works project, which will ensure the works meets strict EA sewage treatment standards from March 2017. Transformation of the site to bring it up to date in terms of output, energy generation and odour control has been taking place while the facility continues to process the waste of the 800,000 people it serves. No mean feat, as Ron Gulliver, AMK's environ- mental manager, explains "…bringing Deephams into the 21st century has been like doing a service on a car, Balfour Beatty, Morgan Sindall and BAM Nuttall are the three partners that make up BMB, which has the £400M-plus contract to construct part of London's new 'super sewer', the Tideway, for Bazalgette Tunnel. The Tideway Tunnel will ensure the capital's sewerage system is fit to support its projected population for at least the next 100 years, and will tackle the issue of discharges of untreated while it's travelling at 70mph!" Its process streams have been taken offline and refurbished but without losing capacity. The flow of sewage coming in cannot be turned off and the quality of the discharge has had to be maintained. Work on the project has been a team effort especially in overcoming a number of "unique challenges" by pooling resources and approaching the issues with a desire to get the best sewage that currently enter the River Thames on a regular basis. The three-way equal joint venture was appointed as preferred bidder for the scheme in February 2015, and is creating the 6km West section of the 25km tunnel. BMB's West section will run from Acton in West London to Wandsworth in South-west London and will incorporate seven separate work sites along the route. Works include design, construction, commissioning solution for the site. Thames Water project lead Martin Hoff says: "We have a fantastically enthusiastic team of people at Deephams who are working tirelessly to achieve great results in a demanding project and operational environment. It is a testament to the spirit of true collaboration and forward thinking that we have been able to overcome the many challenges faced and deliver real success for Deephams." and maintenance for a two- to five-year period following construction completion. BMB awarded a consultancy contract to the Arup Atkins joint venture to provide a range of design and engineering services. A digital construction approach utilising Building Information Modelling (BIM) allows full testing and simulation of construction activity before works start on site for safe and efficient delivery. Project materials are being transported down the River Thames to ease road congestion, emissions and disruption throughout the duration of the project. BMB invested in two specialist tug boats to support the delivery of the tunnel's west section. The tugs will be used to haul barges up and down the Thames carrying materials to the work sites and assisting with the removal of spoil from the tunnel excavation.
