A new hydroelectric power plant, the
largest low-head river hydro plant ever
to be built in Yorkshire and the largest
plant commissioned in England since
the start of the century, was officially
opened last month.
Harnessing the flow of the
River Calder, Barn Energy's 500kW
Kirkthorpe scheme, four miles east of
Wakefield, has a turbine that gener-
ates enough renewable electricity to
supply 800 homes in perpetuity.
The £5.3 million plant will generate
electricity 24/7, all year round, for the
next 100 years. It was completed on
