26 ALLIANCES 2017 GBV, the joint venture between Black & Veatch and Galliford Try, supports the Environment Agency's (EA) Water and Environment Management(WEM) framework. The venture is supporting the EA through the largest and most flexible section of the framework – Lot 4 Asset Delivery. A project that the alliance is working on is the £95M 'Our City Our River' scheme is Derby, which aims to reduce Derby's flood risk to protect against a 1-in-100- year flood occurrence on the River Derwent, at the same time as maximising regeneration opportunities. The programme includes flood walls, the raising and lowering of land to create embankments and the creation of new flood conveyance corridor. It also provides an opportunity to release the economic potential of brownfield sites along the river frontage, while improving access to the riverside including pedestrian and cycle routes. Covering 13km of the River Derwent, it is also expected to enhance ecology in the river and help deliver Water Framework Directive objectives. The programme is being funded from a number of sources including Flood Defence Grant in Aid, the Environment Agency, Local Growth Fund and Derby City Council. The EA is investing more than £2.5B to reduce the risk from river and coastal flooding, and secure social and environmental improvements. The agency expects that 75% of its capital programme spending will be via Lot 4, which encompasses consulting, design and construction services undertaken either separately or as design and build projects. The projects will help manage coastal and river flood risk as well as coastal erosion. GBV ALLIANCES 2017 GBV progresses with Derby flood scheme GBV is carrying out 75% of the EA's capital programme spending PARTNERS Galliford Try, Black & Veatch CLIENT Environment Agency CONTRACT Water and Environment Management (WEM) framework, Lot 4 Asset Delivery Arcadis, Pell Frischmann, Balfour Beatty and Interserve form part of another long-running consortium having been working with South West Water (SWW)as part of the utility's H5O engineering delivery alliance since 2009. As part of H 5 0, the partners are working on SWW's new £60M Mayflower water treatment works to serve Plymouth and the surrounding area. Arcadis is the main design contractor, in partnership with consulting engineer Pell Frischmann. Together they are responsible for all the design work outside of the key treatment process. Infrastructure group Balfour Beatty is the main construction contractor, in partnership with Interserve, responsible for the construction of all infrastructure, buildings and pipelines for the new water treatment works. PWN Technologies, a leading water technology company based in the Netherlands, is responsible for the design, installation and commissioning of the main water treatment process – the first time this technology has been used in the UK. The new state-of-the-art works will replace the outdated treatment works at Crownhill in Plymouth, which was built in the 1950s and is reaching the end of its useful life. The main construction is scheduled to finish by December 2017 and become operational in September 2018, with the existing Crownhill works retiring from service a few months later. Interserve and Balfour Beatty are carrying out major capital works for SWW while Pell Frischmann and Hyder are providing civil engineering design services. MEICA services for SWW K6 programme are through H5O's other suppliers, namely Bridges Electrical Engineers, Kier MG, Nomenca and Tecker. It is worth noting that Kier's deal also includes IWDS and sewerage capital reactive work.
