It is a magnetic gear system that replaces mechanical gears for applications such as gear- based water and wastewater pumps. How does it work? The torque in a magnetic gear is developed though magnetic flux over the surface of the air-gaps in the mechanism, meaning there is no mechanical contact between the sha s. This removes friction and the need for lubrication, filtration and the associated cost of maintenance. What's so good about it? The PDD offers a significant advantage over conventional permanent magnet (PM) motor / generator technology, achieving a step-change in continuous torque density of up to eight times that of equivalently cooled PM machines, while maintaining high efficiency. The increase in torque density enables the motor to drive loads directly with no gearbox. Further benefits include inherent gear compliance and reduced oscillation and noise. Magnetic gears also remove damaging torque overload conditions such as foreign objects finding their way into pumps. NORD Drivesystems Intelligent drives from NORD Drivesystems with an integrated PLC are now equipped with sensor interfaces and extensive diagnostic and process control functions that enable them to detect blockages, and in many cases independently restore normal operation. If the drive is able to remove an obstacle, such as a blockage in a pipe, by repeatedly changing the motor speed and direction, it will then resume normal operation. If the problem persists, the inverter can submit an error signal to the control level and initiate a fallback procedure. ABB ACH 580 ABB's ACH580 is a new variable-speed drive (VSD) dedicated to heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) applications, such as air handling units and pumps. The drive includes variable- speed internal fans for maximum energy saving and the ideal partner for ABB's IE4 SynRM motor. In addition to offering energy savings up to 60 percent, the ACH580 offers an intuitive operating panel enabling quick and easy installation, and native BACnet (and Modbus) communications. Lowara Resiboost Xylem has launched ResiBoost, an intelligent variable frequency drive (VFD) that matches system demand to maximise pump efficiency and minimise general wear and tear. Part of Xylem's Lowara brand, ResiBoost is suitable for a wide range of residential applications such as submersible and surface pumps, and is a plug-and-play device designed for easy installation and use. Users simply connect the VFD to water and electricity and set the desired pressure, while the Lowara ResiBoost automatically controls the speed of the pump while keeping the pressure in the system constant.
