Winner Professor Jeni Colbourne MBE Ensuring that the understanding of water quality and public health is incorporated into scienti c standards and practice across the international stage earned the Drinking Water Inspectorate's (DWI) former chief inspector, Professor Jeni Colbourne MBE, the award for Outstanding Individual Contribution to the Water Industry. Her achievements are numerous but notably she was responsible for: Refocusing the regulatory framework for drinking water on its core purpose of public health protection Ensuring that the UK was the rst country in the world to implement into law and practice the World Health Organisation's water safety plan approach Transferring knowledge of drinking water regulation to the authorities in other countries such as Ireland and Portugal, resulting in measurable improvement in drinking water quality Jeni took up the role of chief inspector at the DWI in 2003, serving three terms in o" ce before standing down last summer. She is a highly respected scientist who has not been afraid to court controversy when she deemed it necessary. She was awarded the MBE for services to Public Health and the Water Industry in 2000, and in 2014 was named by the Science Council as one of the top 100 practising scientists in the country. Outstanding Individual Contribution Finalist: Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water and its Five Fords Energy Park aims to maximise the energy generation and carbon reduction potential of a wastewater treatment works. Finalist: Meteor Communications for its 3G/GPRS camera system. Integrating GPRS cameras into a system for monitoring š ood defenced assets, is saving carbon through 50% fewer site visits. Finalist: Northumbrian Water Group for its Howden biomethane injection plant, which takes renewable biogas from an AAD process and puri es it for injection into the gas distribution network. Finalist: Severn Trent Water and MWH Treatment for the Hullard Ward STW where a Vertical Flow Reed Bed, comprising both primary and secondary treatment, led to a CO2 reduction of 1,905kg. Finalist: The Deritend Group and Riventa and their real-time pump effi ciency measurement, which comprises real time instructions on how to operate a water treatment works at the lowest possible cost for a utility. Finalist: Veolia installed an automated biological desulphurisation system at Alanfearn WwTW, which serves the Inverness catchment, to reduce the H2S in the biogas and protect the CHP engine. Winner Anglian Water, @One Alliance and David Ball Group For its trailblazing School Safety campaign, where animations and supporting material provide š exible teaching aids to primary schools to deliver to warn of the dangers of utility streetworks.
