March 2015 Local Authority Waste & Recycling 25 local authorities to talk to the welfare departments and/or talk to FRN. We can help either department reduce waste, reduce budgets and reduce the likelihood of local people - living in financial crisis – from getting deeper into debt. Why is bulky waste still going to landfill? Several reasons could be behind the cause. First, you have historical/ contractual limitations. You have waste management contracts not building in the option to re-use bulky waste and working with the third sector. Second, a lack of understanding and innovation on the part of commissioners about the range of services the third sector can provide. Third, a belief – possibly legitimate – that local third sector partners have neither the capacity nor will to provide a service (the capacity and the professionalism of the sector has increased enormously since FRN introduced a quality management auditing and certification standard; over 60 FRN members are now Approved Reuse Centres). What are the next steps for FRN and plans for the future? Waste is a poverty issue and local authorities have the opportunity to tackle both poverty and waste. By doing this they can help to reduce their costs and make massive savings. However, they need to be receptive to the idea of working with the third sector. We take in 3.3m items per year. We can repair items but we need to get access to white goods. However, we cannot get access to some of these white goods and sometimes we have to buy new ones. The compliance schemes need to give us access to these items. Our doors are open. We think it's time that commissioners and waste managers come to see what enormous value our sector can bring to local communities, local budgets, future waste services and the broader waste prevention agenda, and to access the highly knowledgeable, practical support we provide. People in poverty are waiting. Helen Middleton is the market development manager at Furniture Re- use Network (FRN). CPI (Confederation of Paper Industries) has announced that it has appointment- ed Simon Weston as its director of Raw Materials. Weston joins CPI with 20 years' experience of work- ing in the paper industry. He joined the senior management team of the Smurfit Kappa SSK paper mill in 1995 as managing director of the raw mate- rial procurement arm Midlands Paper Recycling, before moving to a similar role at the solid board box maker, Kappa Corby in 2000. In 2005 he was asked to lead the newly consolidated Smurfit Kappa Recycling, where he has worked until recently. Erdwich Zerkleinerungssysteme Recycling and shredding technology specialist Erdwich Zerkleinerungssysteme has announced that it is currently working on fine- tuning its new single-shaft shredder M800/1 in its test-centre. The Bavarian-based firm specializes in designing bespoke shredding machines, which are mainly used for volume reduction, product destruction, material separation and recycling of raw materials. Erdwich's in-house test centre allows its customers to test the performance and robustness of the customized shredders it produces. The firm's new single-shaft shredder M800/1 is equipped with an automatic ejection of extraneous material. A spokesman from Erdwich said: "For the models currently available the extraneous material must be removed by hand after recognition. However, according to Erdwich, its new technology can detect "such foreign matters and discharges them automatically. This saves time and protects the operating personnel". According to Erdwich, the machine is driven at the test stand with different materials and control programmes in order to determine the ideal configuration for use. Erdwich uses an extensive range of machines at its test centre and has a team of experienced engineers, designers and mechanics. According to the firm, more than 40m refrigerators have been recycled with Erdwich technology. http://www.erdwich.com Mover and shaker PRODUCTS & SERVICES A range of shredders and coarse crushers Erdwich makes bespoke shredding systems Engineers test different materials and system configurations RE-USE
