Most places in the world do not have to produce finished water with a maximum boron concentration of 0.3 mg/l, maximum chloride concentration of 20 mg/l and maximum sodium concentration of 30 mg/l. IDE has patented a cascading system to achieve these low levels. The system comprises a double-pass SWRO-BWRO system where the concentrate from the BWRO units is sent to a double-pass BWRO-BWRO system as shown in figure 4. The Hadera SWRO desalination plant has been operating and meeting demanding quality and quantity specifications for more than four years. This has been accomplished not solely through IDE's patented, unique process but also through the exceptional calibre of the plant personnel. UniqUE PERSOnnEl I have personally trained more than 10,000 water treatment professionals at hundreds of plants around the world since 1988 yet I have never encountered a more knowledgeable group than the management and engineering personnel from Ashkelon, Hadera and Sorek. They were able to explain fully the economic impact not only of the electricity rate, but of chemical cleaning, element replacement, shutdown, flushing and many other crucial elements of the plants' operation. It is my belief that the time-honoured 80:20 rule for training applies. That is the adage that goes: it takes 20% of the time to bring an RO water treatment professional up to an 80% knowledge level, then 80% of the time to achieve as much of the last 20% as possible. The Hadera workshop group came into the training with a knowledge base greater than 80% so essentially 100% of the time was spent in establishing as much of the last 20% as possible. COnClUSiOn Three of the largest SWRO desalination plants in the world were designed and are operated by dedicated operation and maintenance companies in which IDE is the major shareholder. IDE uses its unique, patented process scheme at these plants to produce finished water at the lowest operating costs offered in large-scale build- own-transfer projects. Furthermore, these plants are managed and operated by outstandingly knowledgeable people.
