MOVING ON UP Appointments Independent research consultancy HR Wallingford has appointed Andrew Brown as director of water and flood management. He re-joins Wallingford following four years with water-infrastructure software company Innovyze. Microbiology company Lab M has appointed Wendy Martindale as director of sales & marketing. Wendy joins Lab M from one of Europe's largest laboratory services companies. She is a scientist by training who has a broad range of commercial experience in scientific and laboratory markets. The British Pump Manufacturers' Association (BPMA) has elected Andy Ratcliffe, managing director of KSB, as president. The announcement was made at the BPMA's annual general meeting on 21 November 2013. Monitoring equipment manufacturer, Partech Instruments, has appointed Oliver Puckering as sales engineer, responsible for southern England. He takes up the newly-created position following over four years with membrane specialist Modern Water." Training helps deliver safer chemical clean-up A new clean-up system is helping Severn Trent Water (STW) bettermanage small spillages of highly aggressive water treatment chemicals. Operators at STW treatment works in the utility's southern area have been trained to use the system which was devised by Paul Stevens, STW's senior technician for water production in Warwickshire, working with Miles Hillmann from spill treatment specialist Fosse Liquitrol. Fosse Liquitrol says the system ensures spillages are neutralised quickly because the correct neutralising chemical is always on hand and the operation's progress can be confirmed via a simple colour change system, backed up by litmus tests. This reduces environmental risks and avoids the cost and down-time of using specialist contractors. Severn Trent staff in training for clean-up Stevens says problems clearing up one particular spill persuaded him a better system was needed: "Our aim is always to act fast and act once, and we had failed to do that in this instance." The water pipe was protected with Denso Protected water pipe Steelcoat 100 and 400 Tape Wrap systems. The steelwork on the main structure of the bridge was protected using Denso Steelcoat 700 system. This consists of Denso ST Epoxy followed by a top coat of Denso Weathershield. www.denso.net Danish manufacturer Grundfos Pumps has won a Green Apple Award for its S Tube at the recent Green Apple Awards. Grundfos says the S Tube combines high efficiency and greater solids handling, resulting in significantly lower running costs in wastewater applications for the first time. This is because the new tube shape means "no dead zones", as well as no cutting or moving parts that wear out. This creates a hydraulic efficiency of 84%, without compromising free passage. www.grundfos.co.uk Grundfos' S Tube Hach Lange wins monitoring contract Korean firm installs peristaltic dosing pumps Hach Lange has been awarded a contract by engineering consultancy Black & Veatch to supply water quality monitoring equipment as part of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water's £100M Go to Green programme. The three-year project is designed to increase Turbidity will be 15 drinking water treatment works' measured by Hach's resilience and enhance water quality 1720E Turbidimeter throughout Wales. The drinking water quality monitoring equipment will include sensors for the measurement of organic load, turbidity and chlorine. www.hach-lange.co.uk 32 Water & Wastewater Treatment January 2014 An electronics company with numerous plants across South Korea was experiencing inconsistent aluminium sulphate dosing at its wastewater treatment facilities when tank levels were low. Maintenance costs were Peristaltic dosing high too. Local distributor Dong-Il Ent recommended replacing the existing metering pumps with dosing specialist Verder's Verderflex system, comprising eight Rapide R2S peristaltic tube pumps. The enduser now experiences predictable maintenance patterns and has reduced process downtime and maintenance costs. www.verder.co.uk wwtonline.co.uk
