You can read a full report of the winners in our special round-up which starts on page 8. For everyone who was there I'm sure you'll all agree that it was a great opportunity to celebrate the good work taking place across the sector. We were delighted with the number of entries which came from a good cross section of the industry. Since the event took place it has been great to see so many of the winning network operators use the stories of their success to gain positive PR coverage – something that's a clear bene… t. On the same day we also ran our Network Forum event, which oˆ ered attendees an opportunity to learn across three streams: future networks; ‹ exible networks; and low carbon transformation of transport. We look forward to building on the success of both events next year. Meanwhile, I've had an issue to put together and there's a focus on smart telecommunication technologies. I took the opportunity to speak to Dr Peter Couch (page 12), chief executive of the Joint Radio Company (JRC) – a joint venture between UK electricity and gas industries - which was initially created to manage radio spectrum used by the UK energy industry. The role of telecommunications o› en goes under the radar, but from speaking to people across the industry it's clear that they're going to be a key enabler in helping to deliver the once in a generation transformation of the energy system that is o› en talked about. In other news, gas heating systems will be banned in new homes from 2025 under new regulations unveiled by Chancellor Philip Hammond. This announcement came during the Spring Statement when the government said that it will introduce a Future Homes Standard by 2025, so that new build homes are future- proofed with low carbon heating and "world leading levels of energy eŸ ciency."
