Direct operations 2. Supply chain and watershed management 3. Collective action 4. Public policy 5. Community engagement 6. Transparency UN member states adopted 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015, informed by Global Sustainable Development Reports (SDRs). Integrated into the SDRs is a standalone report on water. The action decade for water is 2018 - 2028, says UN. The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) has introduced a new standard on water reporting which its 27 members have pledged to adopt. 'A practical guide to consistent water reporting' was published in March 2017. The miners are expected to produce their first water reports in 2019. The disclosure standard was developed over four years of consultation with the mining and metals industry. The result is a benchmark for minimum requirements on water reporting which comprises elements of narrative and data. The standard draws on management information typically produced within mining companies and tailors it to suit an audience of external stakeholders. One of the core features is water performance data showing how much water is input into the mining operation, how much discharged and the amount reused. This information is further broken down by the quality of the water, where it comes from and to where it's discharged. The focus on water reporting reflects growing demand from external stakeholders, particularly investors, for a consistent approach to water risk disclosure across the mining and metals industry. The initiative forms a part of the ICMM's broader Water Stewardship Framework introduced in 2014. "To be transparent and accountable through public reporting of water risks, management activities and performance", is the framework's first strategic imperative. The ICMM's work recognises other water reporting schemes including the Carbon Disclosure Project Water (CDP Water) project, the CEO Water Mandate, part of the UN's corporate sustainability initiative UN Global Compact, and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). "The challenge was to find a way to disclose information on water management that is sensible to people outside," says Hayley Zipp, manager, environmental stewardship and social progress, ICMM. "We have drawn on various reporting frameworks and best practices among members. We want to know about interactions with water, water challenges and opportunities and commitments and responses. The question in Q1 2019 is: How many of ICMM's members will have produced a water report come the end of the year?
