March 2019 Water. desalination + reuse Far Site 31 The five pillars of BHP's water stewardship strategy 1 Risk: Embed processes and systems to effectively manage water-related risks and realise opportunities at a catchment level in the short and longer-term. 2 Technology: Leverage technology solutions that drive a step change reduction in water-related risks, realise opportunities and deliver multiple benefits. 3 Value: Effectively value water investment and operational decisions through integration into strategy, planning and evaluation frameworks. 4 Disclosure: Transparently disclose water-related risks, management and performance at an asset level. 5 Collective action: Collaborate with stakeholders to improve regional water policy and catchment governance and address shared water challenges within our communities and across our value chain. The use of seawater increased following commissioning of Escondida's new desalination plant. Water quality definitions from Minerals Council of Australia Water Accounting Framework Input - Output Model l Type 1 water is of a high qual- ity and would require minimal (if any) treatment to raise the quality to appropriate drink- ing water standards. l Type 2 water is of a medium quality and would require moderate treatment to meet drinking water standards; it may have a high salinity threshold of no higher than 5,000 milligrams per litre total dissolved solids and other individual constituents. l Type 3 water is of a low quality with individual constituents encompassing high values of Total Dissolved Solids, elevated levels of metals or extreme levels of pH; it would require significant treat - ment to meet drinking water standards. This type of water encompasses sea water. BHP takes proactive stance on water reporting BHP published its first standalone water report in 2018. The document provides an overview of the company's water risk exposure and its current water perfor- mance. BHP is the first ICMM member to produce such an in-depth report and has set the bar for others to reach. BHP's water report includes site-level water sensitivity assessments which look at various criteria under the categories climate, water source interactions, competition for resources and regulation. Escondida copper mine, Chile, has 'high influence' on water sensitivity in terms of groundwater interactions, stakeholder concern and proximity to conservation areas. Overall, the site's catchment-level water sensitivity rating is 'high'. Newmont Among the world's largest gold producers.
