14 ALLIANCES 2019 Severn Trent has made use of alliances for some of its biggest projects in recent years, including the £300 million Birmingham Resilience Project, £60 million Newark waste and water improvement project, and £40 million Ambergate reservoir renewal. The Midlands utility has not yet announced its intentions for contractor partnerships in AMP7, although there are some signs that there may be change in the offing: it recently established an in-house capital design department headed up by Ian Kirkaldy and announced plans for a recruitment drive to develop its team of engineering and design specialists by early next year. Severn Trent's AMP6 alliances include the BNM Alliance, the DNM Alliance, One Severn Trent and CiM6. The BNM Alliance sees North Midland Construction (NMC) working in partnership with fellow Midlands-based contractor Barhale to deliver large-scale water infrastruc- ture projects for Severn Trent. BNM has played an important role in Severn Trent's huge Birmingham Resilience Project, signing a £62 million contract in 2015 to deliver three tunnelling projects and one pipeline project on the Elan Valley Aqueduct (EVA) that carries water to the Midlands from Mid Wales. Work on the last of the three underground tunnelling tasks began in February this year and is due for completion in November, and BNM has already been recognised at several award ceremonies for its work on the EVA. The BNM partnership has also been working on the £60 million Newark project to upgrade water and wastewa- ter systems in the Notting- hamshire town. The work involves upgrading and upsizing sewers in many of the roads in Newark as well as installing a 2.85m diameter sewer that extends 3km through the town to allow the sewer system to discharge when it reaches capacity. The state-of-the-art 'Siege Breaker' tunnelling machine spent nine months creating the tunnel, concluding in May this year. The project will also provide a new water supply, which will involve installing 5km of new outlet trunk main from Beacon Heights Reservoir along with approximately 5km of new inlet trunk main feeding into Beacon Heights Reservoir, while 2.5km of ageing water mains will be upgraded. The similarly titled DNM Alliance has seen NMC partnering with Doosan Enpure on the design and construction of a new water treatment plant at Frankley as part of the Birmingham Resilience Project. The 'Treated Water' contract is worth in excess of £100 million, with work commencing in 2017 and expected to take around three years. Doosan Enpure and NMC are also working together on a new advanced anaerobic digestion (AAD) plant at Strongford sewage treatment works. The One Severn Trent alliance has existed for close to a decade, with contracts initially having been set up in 2009. One Severn Trent, currently contracted to work for the company until 2020, includes Costain, Amey, Laing O'Rourke, Morgan Sindall, Mott MacDonald Bentley, Stantec and NMC working together in collabo- CLIENT: Severn Trent ALLIANCES: BNM Alliance, DNM Alliance, One Severn Trent, CiM6 CONTRACTS: Various - AMP6 delivery TERM: Five years Severn Trent alliances build resilience The 'Siege Breaker' completed its journey under Newark in May ALLIANCES 2019: SEVERN TRENT
