NETWORK / 29 / OCTOBER 2018 the technology develop further with robots able to perform other engineering tasks in our gas pipes. Robots could also be deployed outside the North Lon- don network to deal with issues across our 131,000km network of gas distribution pipes. However, it's not a case of robots taking people's jobs. In addition to the behind the scenes planning and liaison that is still required, CISBOT also needs highly skilled operator teams plus additional engineers onsite to oversee the work. So the use of robots for road - works is actually creating excit- ing new roles within the utilities sector, utilising a similar skillset to that of a drone operator. We'll continue to need boots on the ground into the future and our works will also require people with the specialist skills required to operate the robots. Looking ahead I think robots will play an increasing role in Cadent's mission to ensure that everyone keeps on enjoying the benefits of safe and reliable gas supplies. They will help us to achieve this in a safer, smarter, slicker, less disruptive and more cost- effective way. Our engineers were able to deliver The Strand job in nine weeks with significantly less ex - cavations than the nine months it would have taken using tradi- tional methods, not to mention the knock on disruption to road users and the local community. Such impressive results are only the beginning of one of the most exciting revolutions in roadworks since the arrival of the mechanical digger – it's exciting that Cadent is in the vanguard.
