Promoting desalination in Latin America _________ Emilio Gabbrielli, vice president ��� business development, Toray Membrane USA Inc ___ IT IS NOT EASY and probably too ambitious to write an article like the one on pp 25-28. However, I thought that it would be useful to let the desalination community to know a bit more about us in Latin America, as we are still very little represented in the International Desalination Assocation (IDA). I have no doubts that my regional review is incomplete and that I have failed to mention some interesting applications. In particular I have made no attempt to survey the applications based on evaporative technology, which indeed has had a very significant role in the region. I have also written mainly a qualitative paper and not attempted to put figures on the size of the market: this is better left to specialized publications like the IDA Desalination Yearbook 2012-2013, which is just hot off the press. However, to all those who feel I have failed to mention an important application I say: please correct this gap in my piece by writing a long or short article on your operational experience and send it to D&WR (< 2,000 words ��� Ed). I am sure they will be delighted to print and share your experience. Also, join IDA and make your voice )heard in the global desalination community. Finally, in 1994 I wrote a similar piece for the last issue of the year of D&WR on Australia, including a look at South East Asia. It was entitled A thirsty land. It is clear in the paper that I expected an expanded role for desalination and water reuse in Australia, but there was no hint at the possibility of all the major cities building their large SWRO plants, as has actually occurred. In 1994 climate change, both in essence and understanding, was still in the making! The concept of a desalination plant as an insurance against climate change was far from coming. Also, desalination had not become a mainstream water supply alternative, as it clearly is today due to improved technology and decreasing costs per cubic meter. Now, in 2012, I feel it is easier to the forecast that in 20 years the whole Latin American region, like the rest of the world, will have many desalination and water reuse plants of all sizes. These will include RO/NF, but also MBR and UF/MF technology, and probably newly developed ones. Other traditional technologies like EDR and evaporative processes will probably continue to be applied in specific applications.
