This Bournemouth sewer – built
between 1964 and 1971 – is expected
to be in service for a further 200 years
aer being lined with a product that
prevents acid damage.
The coastal interceptor sewer is
8km long and serves a population
of about 34,500. The first 200 metres
of the tunnel had been damaged by
biogenic corrosion because the sew-
age was stationary for long periods,
allowing hydrogen sulphide to form,
