A TIME OF CHANGE When walking the aisles at this year's Utility Week Live there were a variety of views over what the biggest disruptor is in the energy sector. One person told me cyber security, one said regulation while another highlighted data. It was great to see the Network theatre packed out over the two days and there were sessions that covered all three of the subject areas I've highlighted above. On the • rst day of the event I chaired a session entitled 'Learning from RIIO1 and moving towards RIIO2'. Attendees heard from Jonathan Brearley (Ofgem), Sul Alli (UK Power Networks), Steven Edwards (Wales & West Utilities) and Laura Sandys (Challenging Ideas). Sandys made the case for the creation of a multi-utility regulator and network regime to improve collaboration across sectors, lower costs and simplify the industry for consumers. The former Tory MP and now chief executive of Challenging Ideas said the current regulatory arrangements must be radically overhauled to accommodate the emergence of bundled utilities. She explained that her "great desire" is to end up with "one consumer regulator for all essential services" as well as "one multi-utility network regime". During another session that I attended in the Network theatre there was a discussion around data, disruption and the digital network. One speaker commented that the energy system is national critical, requires real-time control and is undergoing transformative change. This transformation o– ers an opportunity for a cyber resilient and reliable system that is not dependent on large generation assets or one type of energy source. I've said before that collaboration and innovation are two words that you'll o— en hear when speaking with people in this industry and this was once again the case at Utility Week Live. The energy sector continues to evolve and there will be plenty more disruption as this transformation takes place. Utility Week Live provided an insight into what this disruption might look like, but in truth there's no right or wrong answer, just a series of views and actions that will help shape the energy landscape. Look out for a full review of the show in the next issue of Network. THE FUTURE 28 The emergence of EVs A roundtable discussion on the subject of electric vehicles. 30) Providing a platform Trialling a smart grid platform. 32 Dealing with data Proactive data management discussed at roundtable.
