4 WET NEWS MAY 2018 | wwtonline.co.uk NEWS+ Atkins gets Water UK contract to boost drainage resilience Framework set to be published later this year W ater UK has appointed Atkins to develop a framework to enable water companies across Eng- land and Wales to strengthen drainage resilience when they produce their drainage and wastewater management plans. There is currently no statu- tory requirement for water com- panies to produce long-term drainage and wastewater plans and, as a result, companies have the • exibility to produce their own plans, within broad guidelines. The UK government, Welsh government and Ofwat have all highlighted the need for the water industry to make improve- ments to its current approach to long-term drainage and waste- water planning. The framework will build on the Drainage Strategy Frame- work, published by Ofwat and the Environment Agency in May 2013, and more recently, the work of the 21st Century Drain- age Programme. The project team has begun work on the framework and it is scheduled to be published in late summer 2018. Brian Arkell, project director, Atkins, said: "The need to pro- vide a guiding framework for the long-term planning of drain- age and wastewater services that can be applied across Eng- land and Wales, and potentially essential part of how the indus- try strengthens its drainage resilience for generations to come. "Atkins is well-placed to drive the development of this frame- work, having led on a number of initiatives that have shaped the future of the water industry, MAINTAIN ACCESS DURING UTILITY REPAIR WORK +44 1608 67888 www.oxfordplastics.com sales@oxfordplastics.com Oxford's Original Award Winning LowPro 15/10 Driveway Board "Quick and easy to install.
