32 LEADERS 2018 THE LEADERS 2018 STANTEC UK Gregge House Gregge Street Heywood Lancashire OL10 2DX www.stantec.com Stantec takes on mantle of MWH Global infrastructure design and delivery company Stantec, which had previously invested its energies squarely on North America, is now established as a giant in the UK infrastructure market a•er completing its integration of MWH UK and MWH Treatment on 1 January. The integration followed the merger in March 2016, which saw the creation of a combined business with 22,000 employees globally, across 400 locations, spanning six continents. The deal was logical for both parties and creates a multi-sector firm with a global footprint, according to UK managing director Cath Schefer. The combined business is seeking to build on its top consultant position in the UK water sector and expand its expertise further into infrastructure, energy and resources, environmental services and buildings. Financial results for 2016 showed turnover up 6 per cent to £100.7 million, although that increase was down from 12.7 per cent the previous year. Gross profit also dipped slightly to £38.1 million from £39.5 million, and operating profit dropped to £7.9 million from £12.6 million, with the reductions put down to the Middle East, as the company cited the "continuing economic unrest and challenges" in the region. In 2016 the firm partnered on a number of frameworks with utilities including Southern Water, Northumbrian Water, Scottish Water, Severn Trent and Thames Water, and in February this year it was announced that Yorkshire Water had appointed Stantec as its sole strategic planning partner for AMP7. The seven- year contract, worth £50 million, can be extended for a further five years. Stantec was founded in Canada in 1954.
