With increasing pressures on contractors and further developments in trenchless techniques, now is a great time to explore these methods. During 2017, the Govern- ment consulted on options for lane rental schemes (LRS). Such schemes charge contractors by the day for occupying the highway for works. The consultation options included extending LRS or the powers of permit schemes, but the result is yet to be announced. It appears that extension of such schemes is likely. One feature is that charges are dropped during unsocia- ble hours, encouraging work to be carried out then, when labour costs are higher. Minimising time on site will therefore become even more valuable. Avoiding the highway altogether may be possible in many instances by using no-dig methods, dependent on the location of the relevant manhole. Patch repair is a key trenchless technique. It can also be used to repair non-circular assets, such as ovoid pipes, further extend- ing the reach of patch repair. Cured in Place Pipelines (CIPP) effect repairs on longer sections of pipe. A range of length and thickness of liners is now available, with a variety of resin curing methods. Even obstructions can be unblocked using drain cleaning & cutting tools lowered into position from the manhole. Such tools can be used to cut out roots, remove concrete or break up failed liners.
