ELECTRICITY Generation is no longer the biggest emitter Transport has overtaken energy supply as the biggest source of greenhouse gases, according to new government figures. The final emissions statistics for 2016, published by the Depart- ment for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) on 6 February, show transport was responsible for 125.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (MtCO2e), up from 123.4 MtCO2e in 2015. By contrast, generation pumped out 120.2 MtCO2e, equat- ing to a quarter of total emissions, compared with 144.4 MtCO2e in 2015. The 24.2 MtCO2e drop was largely driven by a large decrease in power station emissions due to less use of coal following the conversion of a unit at the Drax plant to biomass and the closure of some power stations. This 62 per cent reduction in coal-fired generation was partly offset by a 39 per cent increase in the use of gas for generation. Since the 1990s, there has been a 57 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from the energy supply sector. However, the statistics show the level of emissions from trans- port has been on the rise since 2014, now accounting for 26 per cent of the total. £4.5m Value of the contract awarded to water retailer Source for Business by Unite Students for services to its student accommodation sites across the UK. 100,000 More than 100,000 supply points have switched water retailer in the first ten months of the open non-household water market, according to MOSL. United Utilities has recruited a 16-month-old rescued cocker spaniel named Snipe to help the company find leaking water mains. Snipe is believed to be the UK's first sniffer dog to be specifically trained to find problem pipes in rural areas. The company said Snipe has been through a "rigorous" training programme to help him learn how to recognise the tiniest traces of chlorine used to disinfect water supplies. Thames Water is asking customers for their views on its plans to provide a "secure and sustainable supply" of water over the next 80 years. The company has launched a public consultation on its draft water resources management plan after "extensive and detailed modelling" of more than 200 options, it said. The draft plan considers significant population growth in London and the Thames Valley and a changing climate.
