IDA & Affiliates IDA names Sanz new president Miguel Angel Sanz, director of strategic development at Suez treatment infrastructure, is the new president of IDA for 2017 to 2019. Sanz led the technical programming for IDA World Congress 2017. McCarthy who is a co-founder and partner of United4Water, and was first vice president of IDA for 2015 to 2017, succeeds longstanding secretary general Patricia Burke on her retirement. "I am honoured to serve the IDA board of directors, our membership, affiliates, partners, public utilities and industrial end-users. We will work to enhance the value that IDA brings to all parties through international strategic alliances, knowledge sharing, and connecting people and ideas to solve the world's growing water supply challenges. We are committed to enhancing our industry events to address technical challenges and solutions including IDA Water Reuse Conference 2018, and IDA World Congress 2019 organised in partnership with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority," McCarthy says. McCarthy has a track record in bringing together stakeholders from government and the private sector to support education, scientific research, professional training programmes, and specialised technology workshops related to desalination and water sustainability. At consultancy United4Water, she was concerned with strategic counselling and assistance in business development, project planning and management, capacity building, and corporate social responsibility activities. McCarthy was formerly deputy centre director of the Middle East Desalination Research Centre (MEDRC) in Oman. As a member of the MEDRC start-up team, she participated in developing and implementing programmes for cooperation in training, education and research in desalination and reuse technologies for Middle East and North Africa, including Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority. McCarthy has participated in executive study in Public Policy and Management for Infrastructure Development at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, and has a bachelor's degree in International Relations, specialising in US-Soviet relations, from San Francisco State University. She has been an IDA member for 20 years. (See Q&A page 30). IDA roll call of officers for 2017 to 2019 The IDA has appointed officers for the 2017 to 2019 term, to support new president Miguel Angel Sanz, and Shannon McCarthy, secretary general. The first vice president is Rachid Ghamraoui, vice president of Besix, and Youqing Li, ROPV chief executive, is second vice president. Amar Water Solutions chief executive Carlos Cosin becomes treasurer, and Mike Dixon, WaterNEXT chief technology officer, is secretary. Emilio Gabbrielli, past president of IDA, and Toray's overseas business development director, is comptroller; Alistair Munro, Projecx director, is parliamentarian; and Leon Awerbuch, president and chief technology officer of Leading Edge Technologies, becomes dean of the IDA Academy. IDA World Congress 2017 award winners in full The IDA recognised the best technical papers and other contributions at IDA World Congress 2017 with a roster of special awards. The best technical papers were awarded in five categories, there are four awards voted for by delegates, and an award for achievement for emerging leaders. The best technical paper award winners are; l The State-of-the-Art Award, for best paper presenting an application of an established desalination or reuse technology in a way that reflects best engineering practices, was won by Sahil Shah, MSc graduate student at the global engineering and research lab, MIT, US, for Optimal Design of a Batch Electrodialysis System for Domestic Desalination. l The Innovation Award, for best paper presenting an innovative desalination or reuse technology that has reached commercial stage but is not yet widely adopted, went to Sergio Salinas-Rodriguez, MSc, PhD, senior lecturer, IHE Del Institute for Water Education, The Netherlands, for A New Method of Assessing Bacterial Growth in SWRO Systems: Method Development and Applications. l The Research and Development Award for best paper on fundamental or applied research of a technology or concept related to desalination or reuse at 28 IDA & Affiliates December 2017 Water. desalination + reuse
