Drax owns and operates three large
biomass plants in Louisiana and Mis-
sissippi that prepare the wood chips
used to power three of the four huge
turbines at its Yorkshire plant.
Rather than employing hydraulics-
equipped tipper trucks, the facili-
ties are fitted with a massive tipper
platform that upends the entire truck
to an angle of 60 degrees. Each tipper
can unload five trucks an hour.
The technology, rarely deployed
in the UK, saves money on the tipper
trucks themselves and is environmen-
tally friendlier because is allows the
trucks to be lighter.
