I'm extremely excited about the prospect of writing about the UK's gas, power and heat networks. It's an exciting time to be joining the industry and to be at the helm of a magazine that's young and growing fast. With so much going on in the sector Network is well placed to re€ ect the technical and competitive game changing technologies and services that will move the industry forward in terms of energy system transformation. Clearly the smooth running of networks is essential and without the engineers who look aƒ er them the economy would inevitably su„ er. I want the magazine, website, newsletter and our events to re€ ect the good work that is taking place across the sector. At the time of going to press, Professor Dieter Helm's independent review into reducing costs in each element of the electricity supply chain has been published. You can read the immediate industry reaction to this on page 12, but in summary he has called for a drastic overhaul of the UK's energy sector. Under his plans regional system operators (RSOs) should be given responsibility for securing local energy supplies and do this by contracting out system requirements. This process should take the place of periodic reviews under the RIIO framework. DNOs would e„ ectively become contractors - "one of a number of competitive suppliers". Quite how many of his suggested reforms will be taken forward by government is yet to be known so it will be a matter of watching this space over the next few months. Look out for more industry reaction in the next issue of Network. Lastly, as a leading publication that is read and retained by key personnel it is important that we play our part in helping to educate the sector. I'm open to suggestions about the areas we should be covering so please do not hesitate to get in touch.
