NOVEMBER 2017 WET NEWS 11 PROJECT SPECS • Overcome a biofouling issue concerning a water production borehole • Propose a solution and carry out remediation work to the borehole TECHKNOW • A 50mm pipe was used with a 'bent' lead length down to the top of the drop set casing • Chlorine dioxide was injected into the borehole • An air lifting tube was lowered into the 50mm pipe and the borehole was blasted with compressed air THE VERDICT "The consultant and client were delighted to have a fully cleaned borehole working efficiently. Also, with the dosing line still situated in the borehole future cleaning operations would be a formality with little downtime and therefore cost" Michael Bushby, BES NEED TO KNOW 1 A CCTV survey of the borehole showed substantial build-up of biofouling matter 2 BES carried out simulation trials for gaining entry into the drop set casing 3 The borehole had filled up with debris and rust which was blocking most of the screened section The submersible pump and rising main were coated in a thick red-brown layer of biofilm The borehole was then purged until all evidence of the chemical was gone. The purged water was tankered off site to a licensed waste dis- posal site. The dosing pipe was le in the borehole for future cleaning operations. The submersible pump and rising main were thoroughly cleaned and disinfected and put back into the borehole and aer a relatively short period of discharge pumping the groundwater was suitable to be sent to production. The consultant and client were delighted to have a fully cleaned borehole working effi- ciently. Also, with the dosing line still situated in the bore- hole future cleaning opera- tions would be a formality with little downtime and therefore cost. n Michael Bushby is contracts manager at Borehole Engineering Services.
