5 4.75 4.5 4.25 4 22 Innovation October 2017 Water Reuse: Drivers, Innovations and Public Perceptions Survey respondents were asked to what extent they agreed with four statements on water reuse and desalination. All of the statements scored highly among respondents working across all regions and sectors, averaging between four and five points or "tend to agree" and "strongly agree". Respondents working across all regions and sectors were more likely to agree with the statement, "The proportion of water reuse relative to other sources will increase over the next 10 years," than the same statement for desalination, indicating that market professionals expect water reuse to unfold as the bigger opportunity for growth over the mid to long-term. Among respondents working in the Americas, the gap between the scoring on the two statements was greatest: their level of agreement that water reuse will grow relative to other sources scored 4.50, against 4.18 for desalination, resulting in a spread of 0.32 points. The spread was smallest for those working in Middle East and Africa (MEA), at 0.04; that's 4.44 for water reuse, and 4.40 for desalination. For respondents whose work covers Asia Pacific and Europe the spread between the two statements was almost exactly the same, at 0.14 and 0.13 respectively, in favour of water reuse. Overall, water reuse was scored as a more important source of water today than desalination, bouyed by respondents who work in the Americas. For respondents whose work covers Asia Pacific, Europe, and/ or MEA, the statement "Desalination is an important source of water today," scored higher than the same statement for water reuse. The strongest agreement with the statement was among respondents working in MEA, who scored it 4.46 out of a possible five, and among whom 62.99 per cent "strongly agree". While those working in the Americas are more likely to agree that water reuse is an important source of water, those who work in Asia Pacific are generating a higher proportion of revenue from reuse. On average, respondents working in Asia Pacific generate 29 per cent of sales from water reuse, the highest proportion compared to respondents focusing on other regions. It's lowest in Europe at 21 per cent. Expectations for reuse are high across the board, averaging 29 per cent anticipated revenue growth in the year to 30 June 2018. • The potential of water reuse as against desalination is most pronounced among those working in the Americas • Respondents working in Asia Pacific are generating the highest proportion of revenue from water reuse • Agriculture leads the way in terms of revenue today, and growth expectations All respondents All respondents Americas Americas Asia Pacific Asia Pacific MEA MEA Europe Europe Industrial Industrial Municipal Municipal Agricultural Agricultural Survey results indicate that water reuse is gaining ground as a water source compared to desalination, although expectations on new capacity of both are strong for the mid to long-term What's your view on how the market for water reuse will develop in the short and long-term ?
