NETWORK / 28 / OCTOBER 2017 as inertia starts to reduce. Grid operators have traditionally relied on estimates of inertia from synchronous sources of power but don't get these from non-synchronous sources such as wind or solar, or from the demand side. "There is a perfect storm being created," says Borrett. "As more traditional genera- tion goes o• ine and renewable generation comes on, there is less visibility of how much inertia is actually being produced by the traditional generators; and this is hap- pening at a time when inertia is dropping – as a result of there being less of those traditional generators producing inertia in the • rst place." Reactive Technologies has been working with National Grid and says that for the • rst time it has correctly measured inertia within the grid on an ongoing basis. Knowing what inertia is in real time should help the system operator to procure the resources it needs to manage the system and balance it in the event of a failing power station, or other interruption. If there is enough visibility about the system at a given point in time, REACTIVE TECHNOLOGIES you can choose which assets will be most eƒ ective to balance the grid, Borrett says. On a sunny day, for example, renewable generation assets might provide the best response. "Without knowing the state of the system to a very • ne degree it is hard to know which ones are likely to be right at the time," he explains. The system works by putting a signal into the network that can be used to assess what the level of inertia is. It builds on a "very accurate" network of measurement devices that Reactive previously installed as part of the earlier project to send data across the grid. The devices are able to simultaneously monitor tiny changes in the operation of the grid and work out what that means from the perspective of measur- ing inertia. Ultimately, the system should be able to help National Grid better manage the long- term transition to having more renewable generation on the system. "It will enable the grid to manage its network in the right way, procuring services of the right quality. "The grid itself should be more stable." "There is a perfect storm being created as more traditional generation goes offl ine and renewable generation comes online."
