The ambition to build a water recycling infrastructure moved forward on 11 July 2017 when Metropolitan's board of directors voted in favour of awarding a $13.9 million contract for construction of an advanced water treatment demonstration facility for groundwater replenishment. The 500,000 US gallon a day (1,900 m3/d) demo plant will operate for a minimum of a year to generate information that could potentially be used to inform construction of a full-scale recycled water plant that has been proposed by Metropolitan, and by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County. The potential regional recycled water programme could see Metropolitan take treated wastewater from the Sanitation Districts' Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in Carson, and further purify it using reverse osmosis and other processes. "We face a future that will bring more drought years, compounded by uncertainties from climate change and variability of imported water supplies. Recycled water would provide us a reliable, drought-proof, climate- resilient, local supply to recharge groundwater basins and supply the needs of the region's growing economy, even in dry years," said Metropolitan board chairman Randy Record. PENNSYLVANIA, USA Evoqua continues water technology purchasing spree Evoqua continued on the acquisition trail with a clutch of purchases covering wastewater solutions and irrigation components. The company acquired Olson Irrigation Systems, already a supplier to its VAF product line, as well as three companies from Canada's ADI Group. Olson is a designer and producer of fi lters and irrigation components for agriculture and industry, and will become part of Evoqua's aquatics and disinfection division, joining the VAF line. "Olson has been a trusted partner of Evoqua for years. We are very pleased to strengthen that relationship, and to work closer to drive growth in a variety of key markets," said Evoqua chief executive Ron Keating. The other companies bought by Evoqua are ADI Systems, Lange Containment, and Geomembrane Technologies (ADI). $7.4 million FLORIDA, USA Doosan Hydro becomes SafBon Water Technology following acquisition Doosan Hydro Technology has changed its named to SafBon Water Technology following its acquisition by SafBon Water Service of Shanghai, in May 2017. The Tampa, Florida-based reverse osmosis specialist was sold by Doosan Heavy Industries of Korea for $7.4 million. "Personnel remain unchanged, and we will conduct business as usual with commitment to the water industry, our clients and partners," said CEO Chris Claessen. The deal adds ceramic UF membranes, dissolved air fl otation (DAF) and demineralisers; condensate polishers; and industry-specifi c advanced water treatment to the US business.
